A unified algebraic approach to linear control design

Control Theory for Linear Systems deals with the mathematical theory of feedback control of linear systems. It treats a wide range of control synthesis problems for linear state space systems with inputs and outputs. The book provides a treatment of these problems using state space methods, often with a geometric flavour. Its subject matter ranges from controllability and observability, stabilization, disturbance decoupling, and tracking and regulation, to linear quadratic regulation, $H_2$ and $H_\infty$ control, and robust stabilization. Each chapter of the book contains a series of exercises, intended to increase the reader's understanding of the material. Often, these exercises generalize and extend the material treated in the regular text.

Control theory for linear systems

In this paper the standard $H_\infty $ control problem using state feedback is considered. Given a linear, time-invariant, finite-dimensional system, this problem consists of finding a static state feedback such that the resulting closed-loop transfer matrix has $H_\infty $ norm smaller than some a priori given upper bound. In addition it is required that the closed-loop system is internally stable. Conditions for the existence of a suitable state feedback are formulated in terms of a quadratic matrix inequality, reminiscent of the dissipation inequality of singular linear quadratic optimal control. Where the direct feedthrough matrix of the control input is injective, the results presented here specialize to known results in terms of solvability of a certain indefinite algebraic Riccati equation.
