This study was aimed to compare deferent methods of pregnancy diagnosis in local Iraqi ewes such as the level of progesterone and the ultrasonography and Compare it with laparotomy in order to know the accuracy of the methods of diagnosis. This study was conducted on private livestock farm in Heet city / Al-Anbar province far away about 180 km west of Baghdad. The number of animals were included in this study was 20 ewes of local Iraqi breed, Aged between 2-4years with a body weight between 40-50 Kg. The animals were oestrus Synchronized program. Blood samples were collected from jugular vein at 18 and 20 days of insemination, in order to measure the level of progesterone as first methods. Pregnancy was diagnosed with ultrasonography (second method) and third method for diagnosis through the laparotomy via left flank incision which is the judgment between the two methods. The result showed that the accuracy of pregnancy diagnosis method via level of progesterone, ultrasonography and the laparotomy were 88.5%, 92% and 100% respectively. There was a significant difference between the laparotomy method as Compared with ultrasonography and the progesterone level. It was concluded that the proper method of pregnancy diagnosis in ewes was the ultrasonography with allow risk.

Pregnancy diagnosis in Local Iraqi ewes: A Comparative study

The study were undertaken on 16 Iraqi Awassi ewes, presented in the farm of college of veterinary medicine, Al- Fallujah University/ Fallujah, during the end of February to the half of the march, 2018. The age of the animals ranged between 2 to 4 years. All the ewes were examined by ultrasonography by specialist in order to be sure that the animals not pregnant with B- mode system. All the animals has been synchronized with vaginal sponges impregnated in 40 mg flurogestone acetate (intervet, B.V. Boxemeer, Holland). The animals were put in a standing position clipping and shaving of the left flank area then the site washed with antiseptic and disinfected with tincture iodine. The animals anesthetized locally using 2% xylocaine hydrochloride using 10 ml subcutaneously and intra muscular. left flank sharp dissection about 10-12 cm were made through the skin, muscle and peritoneum. Exteriorization of the uterus and ovaries were done to detect the pregnancy through a symmetry of uterine horns and the enlargement of pregnant horn or to detect the numbers of follicles and corpora lutea after that the peritoneum and the muscles were sutured with catgut no.1 with lock stich pattern. The skin was sutured with silk no.1 using horizontal mattress interrupted pattern. Systemic long acting tetracycline were applied I.M (200 mg/ ml: 100mg/kg B.W) for one day and another for 3 injection. Local antibiotic spray was applied to treat the surgical wounds for 7 days. The suture materials of the skin were removed after 7 days of the operation. The animals were examined daily for general health condition (temperature, heart rate, pulse rate, appetite). The wound also examined for presence of swelling, hematoma, pus or infection or hernia Positive results were considered when the animal in a good general health condition and the wound showed normal healing without presence of swelling, hematoma, pus or infection or hernia. This technique is simple, easily done, save time and cost as well as reduce the surgical trauma with few suture materials. The study was the first of its kind all over the world in exteriorization of genital organs in standing position in ewes.

Background : Appendectomy is a widespread emergency surgery, and to date the appendectomy is still done through two approaches: open (OA) and laparoscopic (LA) and it is not known which is better than the other. Objective : This study aimed to compare OA and LA surgical approaches in patients with acute appendicitis. Patients and methods : Data were obtained from eighty patients underwent appendectomy at Baquba Teaching Hospital between September 2021 and May 2022. Forty patients in (OA) group underwent open surgery, as well as forty other patients in (LA) group underwent laparoscopic surgeries. The two groups were compared according to the operation time, hospital stay, wound infection, and return to normal daily activity. Results : LA approach was associated with shorter (1.4±0.6 days) hospitalization than OA (2.7±2.5 days). Also, the operative time of the laparoscopic approach was clearly less (30±3.2 min) compared to the open approach (35±5.2 min). There was no postoperative infection in the LA patients, and the laparoscopic patients returned to their daily activities faster than the open surgery group. Conclusion: Laparoscopic surgery is a safer approach to appendectomy, especially if it is performed by skilled specialist surgeons.
