The topic of this article is a review of the approach to extract pressure fields from flow velocity field data, typically obtained with particle image velocimetry (PIV), by combining the experimental data with the governing equations. Although the basic working principles on which this procedure relies have been known for quite some time, the recent expansion of PIV capabilities has greatly increased its practical potential, up to the extent that nowadays a time-resolved volumetric pressure determination has become feasible. This has led to a novel diagnostic methodology for determining the instantaneous flow field pressure in a non-intrusive way, which is rapidly finding acceptance in an increasing variety of application areas. The current review describes the operating principles, illustrating how the flow-governing equations, in particular the equation of momentum, are employed to compute the pressure from the material acceleration of the flow. Accuracy aspects are discussed in relation to the most dominating experimental influences, notably the accuracy of the velocity source data, the temporal and spatial resolution and the method invoked to estimate the material derivative. In view of its nature of an emerging technique, recently published dedicated validation studies will be given specific attention. Different application areas are addressed, including turbulent flows, aeroacoustics, unsteady wing aerodynamics and other aeronautical applications.

PIV-based pressure measurement

This paper explores the challenges associated with the determination of in-field pressure from DPIV (digital particle image velocimetry)-measured planar velocity fields for time-dependent incompressible flows. Several methods that have been previously explored in the literature are compared, including direct integration of the pressure gradients and solution of different forms of the pressure Poisson equations. Their dependence on grid resolution, sampling rate, velocity measurement error levels and off-axis recording was quantified using artificial data of two ideal sample flow fields—a decaying vortex flow and pulsatile flow between two parallel plates, and real DPIV and pressure data from oscillating flow through a diffuser. The need for special attention to mitigate the velocity error propagation in the pressure estimation is also addressed using a physics-preserving approach based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). The results demonstrate that there is no unique or optimum method for estimating the pressure field and the resulting error will depend highly on the type of the flow. However, the virtual boundary, omni-directional pressure integration scheme first proposed by Liu and Katz (2006 Exp. Fluids 41 227–40) performed consistently well in both synthetic and experimental flows. Estimated errors can vary from less than 1% to over 100% with respect to the expected value, though in contrast to more traditional smoothing algorithms, the newly proposed POD-based filtering approach can reduce errors for a given set of conditions by an order of magnitude or more. This analysis offers valuable insight that allows optimizing the choice of methods and parameters based on the flow under consideration.

Assessment of pressure field calculations from particle image velocimetry measurements

The popularity of plasma actuators as flow control devices has sparked a flurry of diagnostic efforts towards their characterisation. This review article presents an overview of experimental investigations employing diagnostic techniques specifically aimed at AC dielectric barrier discharge, DC corona and nanosecond pulse plasma actuators. Mechanical, thermal and electrical characterisation techniques are treated. Various techniques for the measurement of induced velocity, body force, heating effects, voltage, current, power and discharge morphology are presented and common issues and challenges are described. The final part of this report addresses the effect of ambient conditions on the performance of plasma actuators.

Diagnostics for characterisation of plasma actuators

Kinetic-energy transport and turbulence production within the shear layer of a horizontal-axis wind-turbine wake are investigated with respect to their influence on the tip-vortex pairwise instability, the so-called leapfrogging instability. The study quantifies the effect of near-wake instability and tip-vortex breakdown on the process of mean-flow kinetic-energy transport within the far wake of the wind turbine, in turn affecting the wake re-energising process. Experiments are conducted in an open-jet wind tunnel with a wind-turbine model of 60 cm diameter at a diameter-based Reynolds number range . The velocity fields in meridian planes encompassing a large portion of the wake past the rotor are measured both in the unconditioned and the phase-locked mode by means of stereoscopic particle image velocimetry. The detailed topology and development of the tip-vortex interactions are discussed prior to a statistical analysis based on the triple decomposition of the turbulent flow fields. The study emphasises the role of the pairing instability as a precursor to the onset of three-dimensional vortex distortion and breakdown, leading to increased turbulent mixing and kinetic-energy transport across the shear layer. Quadrant analysis further elucidates the role of sweep and ejection events within the two identified mixing regimes. Prior to the onset of the instability, vortices shed from the blade appear to inhibit turbulent mixing of the expanding wake. The second region is dominated by the leapfrogging instability, with a sudden increase of the net entrainment of kinetic energy. Downstream of the latter, random turbulent motion characterises the flow, with a significant increase of turbulent kinetic-energy production. In this scenario, the leapfrogging mechanism is recognised as the triggering event that accelerates the onset of efficient turbulent mixing followed by the beginning of the wake re-energising process.

Tip-vortex instability and turbulent mixing in wind-turbine wakes

The flow structure and turbulence in an open cavity shear layer has been investigated experimentally at a Reynolds number of , with an emphasis on interactions of the unsteady pressure field with the cavity corners. A large database of time-resolved two-dimensional PIV measurements has been used to obtain the velocity distributions and calculate the pressure by spatially integrating the material acceleration at a series of sample areas covering the entire shear layer and the flow surrounding the corners. Conditional sampling, low-pass filtering and time correlations among variables enable us to elucidate several processes, which have distinctly different frequency ranges, that dominate the shear layer interactions with the corners. Kelvin–Helmholtz shear layer eddies have the expected Strouhal number range of 0.5–3.2. Their interactions with the trailing corner introduce two sources of vorticity fluctuations above the corner. The first is caused by the expected advection of remnants of the shear layer eddies. The second source involves fluctuations in local viscous vorticity flux away from the wall caused by periodic variations in the streamwise pressure gradients. This local production peaks when the shear layer vortices are located away from the corner, creating a lingering region with peak vorticity just above the corner. The associated periodic pressure minima there are lower than any other point in the entire flow field, making the region above the corner most prone to cavitation inception. Flapping of the shear layer and boundary layer upstream of the leading corner occurs at very low Strouhal numbers of ∼0.05, affecting all the flow and turbulence quantities around both corners. Time-dependent correlations of the shear layer elevation show that the flapping starts in the boundary layer upstream of the leading corner and propagates downstream at the free stream speed. Near the trailing corner, when the shear layer elevation is low, the stagnation pressure in front of the wall, the downward jetting flow along this wall, the fraction of shear layer vorticity entrained back into the cavity, and the magnitude of the pressure minimum above the corner are higher than those measured when the shear layer is high. However, the variations in downward jetting decay rapidly with increasing distance from the trailing corner, indicating that it does not play a direct role in a feedback mechanism that sustains the flapping. There is also low correlation between the boundary/shear layer elevation and the returning flow along the upstream vertical wall, providing little evidence that this returning flow affects the flapping directly. However, the characteristic period of flapping, ∼0.6 s, is consistent with recirculation time of the fluid within the cavity away from boundaries. The high negative correlations of shear/boundary layer elevation with the streamwise pressure gradient above the leading corner introduce a plausible mechanism that sustains the flapping: when the shear layer is low, the boundary layer is subjected to high adverse streamwise pressure gradients that force it to widen, and when the shear layer is high, the pressure gradients decrease, allowing the boundary layer to thin down. Flow mechanisms that would cause the flapping-induced pressure changes, and their relations to the flow within the cavity are discussed.

Vortex-corner interactions in a cavity shear layer elucidated by time-resolved measurements of the pressure field

The present investigation assesses a procedure to extract the aerodynamic loads and pressure distribution on an airfoil in the transonic flow regime from particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The wind tunnel model is a two-dimensional NACA-0012 airfoil, and the PIV velocity data are used to evaluate pressure fields, whereas lift and drag coefficients are inferred from the evaluation of momentum contour and wake integrals. The PIV-based results are compared to those derived from conventional loads determination procedures involving surface pressure transducers and a wake rake. The method applied in this investigation is an extension to the compressible flow regime of that considered by van Oudheusden et al (2006 Non-intrusive load characterization of an airfoil using PIV Exp. Fluids 40 988–92) at low speed conditions. The application of a high-speed imaging system allows the acquisition in relatively short time of a sufficient ensemble size to compute converged velocity statistics, further translated in turbulent fluctuations included in the pressure and loads calculation, notwithstanding their verified negligible influence in the computation. Measurements are performed at varying spatial resolution to optimize the loads determination in the wake region and around the airfoil, further allowing us to assess the influence of spatial resolution in the proposed procedure. Specific interest is given to the comparisons between the PIV-based method and the conventional procedures for determining the pressure coefficient on the surface, the drag and lift coefficients at different angles of attack. Results are presented for the experiments at a free-stream Mach number M = 0.6, with the angle of attack ranging from 0? to 8?.
