Journal ArticleDOI
Estimating the global burden of endemic canine rabies.
Katie Hampson,Laurent Coudeville,Tiziana Lembo,Maganga Sambo,Alexia Kieffer,Michaël Attlan,Jacques Barrat,Jesse D. Blanton,Deborah J. Briggs,Sarah Cleaveland,Peter Costa,Conrad M. Freuling,Elly Hiby,Lea Knopf,Fernando Leanes,François-Xavier Meslin,A. E. Metlin,Mary Elizabeth Miranda,Thomas Müller,Louis Hendrik Nel,Sergio Recuenco,Charles E. Rupprecht,Charles E. Rupprecht,Carolin L. Schumacher,Louise H. Taylor,Marco Antonio Natal Vigilato,Jakob Zinsstag,Jonathan Dushoff +27 more
TL;DR: Investment in dog vaccination, the single most effective way of reducing the disease burden, has been inadequate and that the availability and affordability of PEP needs improving, demonstrating that collaboration by medical and veterinary sectors could dramatically reduce the current large, and unnecessary, burden of rabies on affected communities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Correction: Estimating the global burden of endemic canine rabies.
Katie Hampson,Laurent Coudeville,Tiziana Lembo,Maganga Sambo,Alexia Kieffer,Michaël Attlan,Jacques Barrat,Jesse D. Blanton,Deborah J. Briggs,Sarah Cleaveland,Peter Costa,Conrad M. Freuling,Elly Hiby,Lea Knopf,Fernando Leanes,François-Xavier Meslin,A. E. Metlin,Mary Elizabeth Miranda,Thomas Müller,Louis Hendrik Nel,Sergio Recuenco,Charles E. Rupprecht,Carolin L. Schumacher,Louise H. Taylor,Marco Antonio,Natal Vigilato,Jakob Zinsstag,Jonathan Dushoff,Global Alliance for Rabies Control Partners for Rabies Prevention +28 more
TL;DR: There are a number of errors in Table 3.
Journal ArticleDOI
Role of Oral Rabies Vaccines in the Elimination of Dog-Mediated Human Rabies Deaths.
Ryan M. Wallace,Florence Cliquet,Christine Fehlner-Gardiner,Anthony R. Fooks,Claude T. Sabeta,Álvaro Aguilar Setién,Changchun Tu,Vlad Vuta,Boris Yakobson,Dong-Kun Yang,Gideon Brückner,Conrad M. Freuling,Lea Knopf,A. E. Metlin,Patricia Pozzetti,Pebi Purwo Suseno,Sean V. Shadomy,Gregorio Torres,Marco Antonio Natal Vigilato,Bernadette Abela-Ridder,Thomas Müller +20 more
TL;DR: Oral rabies vaccines have been a cornerstone in rabies virus elimination from wildlife populations; however, oral vaccines have never been effectively used to control dog-mediated rabies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization of Russian rabies virus vaccine strain RV-97.
A. E. Metlin,Lars Paulin,Sini Suomalainen,E. Neuvonen,S. S. Rybakov,V. V. Mikhalishin,Anita Huovilainen +6 more
TL;DR: The entire genome sequence and the deduced amino acid sequences of the major viral proteins were compared with those of other rabies vaccine virus strains and the RV-97 strain seems to be phylogenetically more related to the group of Japanese vaccine strains.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic heterogeneity of Russian, Estonian and Finnish field rabies viruses
TL;DR: The data obtained here show the critical role of geographical isolation and limitation for the genetic clustering and evolution of the rabies virus and also help in predicting its distribution from rabies-affected areas to rabie-free areas.
