Shear flows undergo a sudden transition from laminar to turbulent motion as the velocity increases, and the onset of turbulence radically changes transport efficiency and mixing properties. Even for the well-studied case of pipe flow, it has not been possible to determine at what Reynolds number the motion will be either persistently turbulent or ultimately laminar. We show that in pipes, turbulence that is transient at low Reynolds numbers becomes sustained at a distinct critical point. Through extensive experiments and computer simulations, we were able to identify and characterize the processes ultimately responsible for sustaining turbulence. In contrast to the classical Landau-Ruelle-Takens view that turbulence arises from an increase in the temporal complexity of fluid motion, here, spatial proliferation of chaotic domains is the decisive process and intrinsic to the nature of fluid turbulence.

The onset of turbulence in pipe flow

Pipe flow is a prominent example among the shear flows that undergo transition to turbulence without mediation by a linear instability of the laminar profile. Experiments on pipe flow, as well as plane Couette and plane Poiseuille flow, show that triggering turbulence depends sensitively on initial conditions, that between the laminar and the turbulent states there exists no intermediate state with simple spatial or temporal characteristics, and that turbulence is not persistent, i.e., it can decay again, if the observation time is long enough. All these features can consistently be explained on the assumption that the turbulent state corresponds to a chaotic saddle in state space. The goal of this review is to explain this concept, summarize the numerical and experimental evidence for pipe flow, and outline the consequences for related flows.

Turbulence transition in pipe flow

Transition to turbulence in pipe flow is one of the most fundamental and longest-standing problems in fluid dynamics. Stability theory suggests that the flow remains laminar for all flow rates, but in practice pipe flow becomes turbulent even at moderate speeds. This transition drastically affects the transport efficiency of mass, momentum, and heat. On the basis of the recent discovery of unstable traveling waves in computational studies of the Navier-Stokes equations and ideas from dynamical systems theory, a model for the transition process has been suggested. We report experimental observation of these traveling waves in pipe flow, confirming the proposed transition scenario and suggesting that the dynamics associated with these unstable states may indeed capture the nature of fluid turbulence.

Experimental Observation of Nonlinear Traveling Waves in Turbulent Pipe Flow

Three-dimensional travelling wave solutions are found for pressure-driven fluid flow through a circular pipe. They consist of three well-defined flow features – streamwise rolls and streaks which dominate and streamwise-dependent wavy structures. The travelling waves can be classified by the and traceable down to a Reynolds number (based on the mean velocity) of 1251. The new solutions are found using a constructive continuation procedure based upon key physical mechanisms thought generic to wall-bounded shear flows. It is believed that the appearance of these new alternative solutions to the governing equations as the Reynolds number is increased is a necessary precursor to the turbulent transition observed in experiments.

Exact coherent structures in pipe flow: travelling wave solutions

A family of three-dimensional traveling waves for flow through a pipe of circular cross section is identified. The traveling waves are dominated by pairs of downstream vortices and streaks. They originate in saddle-node bifurcations at Reynolds numbers as low as 1250. All states are immediately unstable. Their dynamical significance is that they provide a skeleton for the formation of a chaotic saddle that can explain the intermittent transition to turbulence and the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in this shear flow.

Traveling waves in pipe flow

We report the results of an experimental study of the transition to turbulence in a pipe under the condition of constant mass flux. The transition behaviour and structures observed in this experiment were qualitatively the same as those described in previous reported studies performed in pressure-driven systems. A variety of jet and suction devices were used to create repeatable disturbances which were then used to test the stability of developed Poiseuille flow. The Reynolds number ( Re ) and the parameters governing the disturbances were varied and the outcome, whether or not transition occurred some distance downstream of the injection point, was recorded. It was found that a critical amplitude of disturbance was required to cause transition at a given Re and that this amplitude varied in a systematic way with Re . This finite, critical level was found to be a robust feature, and was relatively insensitive to the form of disturbance. We interpret this as evidence for disconnected solutions which may provide a pointer for making progress in this fundamental, and as yet unresolved, problem in fluid mechanics.
