Family Asteraceae as a sustainable planning tool in phytoremediation and its relevance in urban areas

Summary Parthenium hysterophorus is a weed of global signifi- cance causing severe economic, environmental, human and animal health problems in Asia, Africa, Australia and the Pacific. In South Asia, P. hysterophorus occurs in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. A host-specific leaf-feeding beetle Zygogramma bicolorata from Mexico was introduced into India in 1984, as a biological control agent for P. hysterophorus. In this study, a GIS-based distribution map of P. hysterophorus and its biological control agent Z. bicolorata in South Asia based on meta-analysis is presented. The map highlights the limited published information on P. hysterophorus incidence in many of the states and territories in India, as well as in neighbouring Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan. Incidence of Z. bicolorata was recorded as three distinct clusters, covering many states in India. In Pakistan, Z. bicolorata was recorded in the Punjab region bordering India. A CLIMEX model based on the current distribution of Z. bicolorata in India suggests that the geographic range of this agent in India and Pakistan can extend to other P. hysterophorus-infested areas in the region. The CLIMEX model also suggests that all of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and parts of Nepal are climatically suitable for Z. bicolorata.

Pharmacology of Tridax procumbens a weed: review.

Nature has been a source of medicinal agents for thousands of years and an impressive number of modern drugs have been isolated from natural resources. Traditional medicine is an important source of potentially useful new compounds for the development of chemotherapeutic agents. The essential values and uses of some plants have been worked out and published, but many of them remain unexplored to date. Therefore, there is a necessity to explore their uses and to conduct pharmacognostic and pharmacological studies to discover their medicinal properties. Tridax procumbens (L.) is a spreading annual herb found throughout India but unfortunately it is one of the neglected plants. Hence, the present review aims to open new avenues for the improvement of medicinal use of Tridax procumbens (Compositae) for various ailments and to bring the anti#diabetic medicinal plant to the scientists’ notice, and raise awareness and add value to the resource. This review attempts to highlight the available literature on Tridax procumbens (L.) with respect to ethnobotany, chemical constituents and summary of various pharmacologic activities.

A total of 36 species under 29 genera of the f amily Asteraceae were collected and identified. Eight (8) genera of the family Asteraceae are cultivated in the study area w hich included 8 species. A brief t axonomic description of ea ch species is given with local na me and valid name. About the total number of species Ageratum conyzoides, Blumea lacera, Eclipta al ba, Tridax procumbens, Vernonia patula and Xanthium indicum are much populated and f ound i n sandy roadside areas o f R ajshahi, N aogaon, N awabgong, N atore, B ogra and Joypurhat. Mikania cordata is only one climbing species all over the study area and Perthenium hysterophorus is new record for B angladesh.

Anatomical (especially stomata and trichome) investigation of the family Asteraceae (Compositae) growing throughout the Rajshahi Division situated in the northern part of Bangladesh was carried out A total of 36 species under 29 genera of the family Asteraceae were collected and identified Among the recorded species, both anomocytic and anisocytic stomata were found in 21 species; anomocytic stomata in 10 species; anisocytic stomata in 3 species; anomocytic and paracytic stomata were found in 1 species; anomocytic, anisocytic and paracytic stomata were found in 1 species Out of the 36 species, stomata were found to be present both on the upper and lower surface in 33 species and only on lower surface in 3 species Three types of trichomes, ie nonglandular multicellular, non-glandular unicellular and glandular multicellular trichomes were recorded Nonglandular multicellular trichome was found in 25 species, non-glandular unicellular in 1 species and glandular multicellular trichome was found in 1 species Trichomes were absent in rest of the species Anatomical characters are importance for systematic studies
