Review: Meshless methods: A review and computer implementation aspects

In this paper, we derive an improved element-free Galerkin (IEFG) method for two-dimensional linear elastodynamics by employing the improved moving least-squares (IMLS) approximation. In comparison with the conventional moving least-squares (MLS) approximation function, the algebraic equation system in IMLS approximation is well-conditioned. It can be solved without having to derive the inverse matrix. Thus the IEFG method may result in a higher computing speed. In the IEFG method for two-dimensional linear elastodynamics, we employed the Galerkin weak form to derive the discretized system equations, and the Newmark time integration method for the time history analyses. In the modeling process, the penalty method is used to impose the essential boundary conditions to obtain the corresponding formulae of the IEFG method for two-dimensional elastodynamics. The numerical studies illustrated that the IEFG method is efficient by comparing it with the analytical method and the finite element method.

The paper presents the improved element-free Galerkin (IEFG) method for three-dimensional wave propagation. The improved moving least-squares (IMLS) approximation is employed to construct the shape function, which uses an orthogonal function system with a weight function as the basis function. Compared with the conventional moving least-squares (MLS) approximation, the algebraic equation system in the IMLS approximation is not ill-conditioned, and can be solved directly without deriving the inverse matrix. Because there are fewer coefficients in the IMLS than in the MLS approximation, fewer nodes are selected in the IEFG method than in the element-free Galerkin method. Thus, the IEFG method has a higher computing speed. In the IEFG method, the Galerkin weak form is employed to obtain a discretized system equation, and the penalty method is applied to impose the essential boundary condition. The traditional difference method for two-point boundary value problems is selected for the time discretization. As the wave equations and the boundary-initial conditions depend on time, the scaling parameter, number of nodes and the time step length are considered for the convergence study.

In this paper, the IEFG method is applied to study the partial differential equations that control the heat flow in three-dimensional space. With the IEFG technique, the Galerkin weak form is employed to develop the discretized system equations, and the penalty method is applied to impose the essential boundary conditions. The traditional difference method for two-point boundary value problems is selected for the time discretization. As the transient heat conduction equations and the boundary and initial conditions are time dependent, the scaling parameter, number of nodes and time step length are considered in a convergence study.

Recently, considerable effort has been devoted to the development of the so-called meshless methods. Meshless methods still require considerable improvement before they equal the prominence of finite elements in computer science and engineering. One of the paths in the evolution of meshless methods has been the development of the element free Galerkin (EFG) method. In the EFG method, it is obviously important that the 'a posteriori error' should be approximated. An 'a posteriori error' approximation based on the moving least-squares method is proposed, using the solution, computed from the EFG method. The error approximation procedure proposed in this paper is simple to construct and requires, at most, nearest neighbour information from the EFG solution. The formulation is based on employing different moving least-squares approximations. Different selection strategies of the moving least-squares approximations have been used and compared, to obtain optimum values of the parameters involved in the approximation of the error. The performance of the developed approximation of the error is illustrated by analysing different examples for two-dimensional (2D) potential and elasticity problems, using regular and irregular clouds of points. The implemented procedure of error approximation allows the global energy norm error to be estimated and also provides a good evaluation of local errors.
