The Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer is designed to probe the solar atmosphere through the detection of spectral emission lines in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength range 150–800 A. By observing the intensities of selected lines and line profiles we may derive temperature, density, flow and abundance information for the plasmas in the solar atmosphere. Spatial and temporal resolutions of down to a few arcseconds and seconds, respectively, allow such studies to be made within the fine-scale structure of the solar corona. Furthermore, coverage of large wavelength bands provides the capability for simultaneously observing the properties of plasmas across the wide temperature ranges of the solar atmosphere.

The Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer for the solar and heliospheric observatory

The CHIANTI atomic database contains atomic energy levels, wavelengths, radiative transition probabilities, and electron excitation data for a large number of ions of astrophysical interest. Version 4 has been released, and proton excitation data are now included, principally for ground configuration levels that are close in energy. The fitting procedure for excitation data, both electrons and protons, has been extended to allow nine-point spline fits in addition to the previous five-point spline fits. This allows higher quality fits to data from close-coupling calculations where resonances can lead to significant structure in the Maxwellian-averaged collision strengths. The effects of photoexcitation and stimulated emission by a blackbody radiation field in a spherical geometry on the level balance equations of the CHIANTI ions can now be studied following modifications to the CHIANTI software. With the addition of H I, He I, and N I, the first neutral species have been added to CHIANTI. Many updates to existing ion data sets are described, while several new ions have been added to the database, including Ar IV, Fe VI, and Ni XXI. The two-photon continuum is now included in the spectral synthesis routines, and a new code for calculating the relativistic free-free continuum has been added. The treatment of the free-bound continuum has also been updated.

CHIANTI—An Atomic Database for Emission Lines. VI. Proton Rates and Other Improvements

We report on the XSTAR atomic database that contains a large quantity of atomic rates for use in spectral modeling of astrophysical plasmas. The database includes atomic energy levels, line wavelengths, radiative transition probabilities, electron impact excitation rates, photoionization cross section, recombination rate coefficients, electron impact ionization rates, and fluorescence and Auger yields. The species considered are all the ions of H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni. The database collects recent data from many sources including CHIANTI, TOPbase, ADAS, NIST, and the IRON Project. Two particular features of the database are the incorporation of photoionization cross sections from the Opacity Project for all levels of every ion, and state-specific recombination rates. State-specific collisional ionization and three-body recombination are also included. The collection of data is used to build excitation-ionization models of each ion for calculation of their spectra for electron densities of up to 1018 cm-3 and temperatures between 100 and 109 K. In addition, every ion model is designed to converge to LTE under appropriate conditions. These models and data are implemented in the photoionization modeling code XSTAR v.2.

The XSTAR Atomic Database

The Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer on the SOHO satellite covers the 940–1350 A range as well as the 470–630 A range in second order. It has detected coronal emission lines of H, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni, particularly in coronal streamers. Resonance scattering of emission lines from the solar disk dominates the intensities of a few lines, but electron collisional excitation produces most of the lines observed. Resonance, intercombination and forbidden lines are seen, and their relative line intensities are diagnostics for the ionization state and elemental abundances of the coronal gas.

Composition of Coronal Streamers from the SOHO Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer

The study of photoionized environments is fundamental to many astrophysical problems. Up to the present most photoionization codes have numerically solved the equations of radiative transfer by making the extreme simplifying assumption of spherical symmetry. Unfortunately very few real astronomical nebulae satisfy this requirement. To remedy these shortcomings, a self-consistent, three-dimensional radiative transfer code has been developed using Monte Carlo techniques. The code, MOCASSIN, is designed to build realistic models of photoionized nebulae having arbitrary geometry and density distributions, with both the stellar and diffuse radiation fields treated self-consistently. In addition, the code is capable of treating one or more exciting stars located at non-central locations. The gaseous region is approximated by a cuboidal Cartesian grid composed of numerous cells. The physical conditions within each grid cell are determined by solving the thermal equilibrium and ionization balance equations. This requires a knowledge of the local primary and secondary radiation fields, which are calculated self-consistently by locally simulating the individual processes of ionization and recombination. The structure and the computational methods used in the MOCASSIN code are described in this paper. MOCASSIN has been benchmarked against established one-dimensional spherically symmetric codes for a number of standard cases, as defined by the Lexington/Meudon photoionization workshops: at Meudon in 1985 and at Lexington in 1995 and 2000. The results obtained for the benchmark cases are satisfactory and are presented in this paper. A performance analysis has also been carried out and is discussed here.

Theoretical atomic structure and electron scattering data for ions in the nitrogen isoelectronic sequence: MG VI, Si VIII, S x, A XII and Ca XIV

Energy levels, oscillator strengths, and electron collision strengths have been computed for the configurations 2s2 2p2, 2s 2p3, 2p4 of Mg VII, Si IX, and S XI. Level populations for the ground configuration and theoretical intensity ratios for the UV lines are tabulated for electron densities and temperatures appropriate to the solar atmosphere. The identification of the Mg VII, Si IX, and S XI UV lines is discussed.
