Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) thin films are of significant interest because of their diamond like structure and properties. c-BN shows high thermal conductivity, chemical inertness against ferrous metals even at high temperatures, wide band gap, and good transmittance over a wide spectral range from UV to visible. Applications of c-BN include hard protective coatings for cutting tools, in optical instruments as UV detectors, as emitters, and in high temperature electronic devices. However, synthesis of phase pure c-BN thin films continues to be very challenging. The present study reviews the current status of the synthesis, characterisation, mechanical, electrical, and optical properties of c-BN thin films. Both physical and chemical vapour deposition methods used for the preparation of the c-BN films are covered. Review of synthesis and properties of cubic boron nitride (c-BN) thin films

The present perspective presents a novel platform for the synthesis of catalyst free photoluminescent carbon nanoparticles derived from the combustion of camphor in a single step flame process. The soot particles were investigated using Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, Raman, transmission emission microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV and photoluminescent spectroscopy. The soot particles exhibited a diamond-like carbon nanostructure, with the presence of hydrophobic functional groups imparting superhydrophobic characteristics. The camphor soot particles revealed the presence of highly graphitized amorphous carbon, which was confirmed by the appearance of G, D1 D2, D3 and D4 bands in the Raman spectra. Photoluminescence of the soot particles was observed when soot particles were excited at λmax. A red shift was clearly noted in the UV spectrum of the soot in different solvents. The agglomeration of camphor soot particles was discussed by measuring the fractal dimensions (Df) of the particles. Combustion of soot particles occurs at 450 °C, approx. 100 °C lower than that of graphene. In-depth investigations suggest the use of these photoluminescent camphor soot particles for superhydrophobic coating applications.

An experimental design for the investigation of water repellent property of candle soot particles

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were deposited on glass substrate by sputtering of a vitreous carbon target in Ar + H2 plasma. The sp2/sp3 content in the films depended on the relative amount of hydrogen in the Ar + H2 plasma. The films were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared studies, Raman studies, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and optical measurements. Hydrophobicity in these films was studied by measuring the contact angles of the water droplets and it was found that the films were extremely hydrophobic. The results are interpreted in terms of hybridization of carbon in these DLC films.

Synthesis of DLC films with different sp 2 /sp 3 ratios and their hydrophobic behaviour

Daily oral administration of p-coumaric acid (PCA) at a dose of 50 mg/kg body wt for 21 days to adult male mice caused a dramatic reduction in serum prolactin concentrations. A significant fall in testicular LH binding was also observed after PCA treatment. Complete recovery of testicular LH binding was obtained by daily administration of prolactin (500 micrograms/mouse) when given simultaneously from day 9 of PCA treatment. A lower daily dose of prolactin (250 micrograms) was found to be ineffective. Scatchard analysis of binding data suggested a decrease in the number of testicular LH binding sites after PCA treatment whereas the affinity constant was unchanged. These results provide direct evidence for an inhibitory effect of PCA on prolactin secretion and also provide additional evidence in favour of a role of prolactin in the modulation of LH receptors.

Modulation of luteinizing hormone receptors: effect of an inhibitor of prolactin secretion, p-coumaric acid.

Boron nitride (BN) films were deposited at different substrate temperatures (623–773 K) on Si substrates by inductively coupled plasma chemical vapour deposition (CVD) technique using borane–ammonia as the boron containing precursor gas. FTIR studies indicated the films to contain mixed phases of cubic BN (c-BN) and hexagonal BN and the percentage of c-BN was dependent on the deposition environment. The optimum deposition condition for obtaining a higher c-BN phase (>90%) was ascertained. Borane–ammonia vapour was diluted with nitrogen and argon and the dependence of the nature of plasma species at the plasma–substrate interface on the c-BN content was ascertained. The surface texture of the films was observed by scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope. Ellipsometric studies were carried out to determine the optical constants of the films.

Synthesis of cubic boron nitride film by inductively coupled plasma CVD technique

BNC films have been deposited on Si (100) and fused silica substrates by inductively coupled plasma chemical vapour deposition (ICP-CVD) technique using a mixture of borane-ammonia, nitrogen and methane as precursor gases. Carbon content in the films is varied by changing the concentration of methane in the precursor gases. The films are amorphous in nature. The films, thus, deposited have been characterized by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction and Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS). Microstructural information has been obtained from SEM studies. Microhardness has been seen to decrease with the increase in carbon content and the highest microhardness observed in these films has been found to be similar to 5.3 GPa.
