High second-order nonlinearities induced in lead silicate glass by electron-beam irradiation

TL;DR: A new technique for inducing a large permanent second-order susceptibility in lead silicate glass by implanting electrons by irradiating the glass with an electron beam is reported.
Journal ArticleDOI

Photoinduced birefringence in optical fibers: a comparative study of low-birefringence and high-birefringence fibers.

TL;DR: The study reveals that Hi-Bi fibers are insensitive to light polarized along the fast axis, in contrast to Lo- bi fibers, which are photosensitive along both axes, and the significance of the results to models based on stress and/or glass defects is briefly discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Erasure of thermally poled second-order nonlinearity in fused silica by electron implantation

TL;DR: The implantation of electrons erases the second-order nonlinearity in thermally poled silica and provides a versatile new means of realizing quasi-phase-matching structures for parametric frequency conversion in glass optical fibers and planar waveguides.
Journal ArticleDOI

Physical origins and general dielectric tensor of photoinduced anisotropy in optical fibers and bulk glasses

TL;DR: In this paper, the perturbations to the dielectric tensor resulting from interference of two arbitrarily polarized waves are derived, and both single and two-photon absorption processes are treated, making the formulation valid for filter formation both by UV side writing and by axial exposure to copropagating or counterpropagating blue-green guided modes.
