Three-body scattering in configuration space

The Faddeev-Noyes equations are solved in their natural Cartesian Jacobi coordinates for scattering below break-up threshold and for bound states. This approach is particularly well adapted to deal with strongly varying interactions. The method is proved to be successful in the three-nucleon system. First results concerning the4He trimer in configuration space are presented and further generalizations are suggested.

Faddeev calculations in configuration space with Cartesian coordinates

Predictions of modern NN interactions for cross sections and spin observables in three-nucleon scattering are displayed. The agreement with experimental data is in general very good, but there are challenging exceptions, which might point to deficiencies in the dynamical input. First results including three-nucleon-deutron scattering below and above the three-nucleon breakup threshold are shown, which illustrate the complexity of composite particle scattering. A systematic study covering all possible breakup configurations is discussed, where those configurations are identified, which are totally insensitive to the choice of the specific NN interaction and those, which are very sensitive. Similarly those scattering observables which do not scale are shown. Finally an application of the interacting three nucleon continuum to exclusive and inclusive electron scattering on {sup 3}He is described and first results are compared to data.

The three-nucleon continuum: Achievements, challenges, and applications

The correct asymptotic behavior of the wave function deduced from the Faddeev equations for three-particle scattering is used to determine the asymptotic conditions. With these conditions, the equivalent set of partial differential equations in configuration space has a unique solution and is numerically solved for two examples. Comparison is made with results from two other basically different methods.
