The invention is a system for providing virtual connections through an ATM interworking multiplexer on a call-by-call basis. A signaling processor receives signaling for a call and selects the virtual connection for the call. The signaling processor generates new signaling that identifies the selection and transfers the new signaling to the ATM interworking multiplexer that accepted the access connection for the call. The multiplexer converts user information from the access connection into ATM cells for transmission over the virtual connection in accord with the new signaling.

The present invention includes a method, system, and apparatus for providing communication control. The invention includes a method in which signaling is processed externally to a switch before it is applied by the network elements. The processor is able to select network characteristics and signal the network elements based the selections. A network employing the processing method is also included, as well as a signaling system that employs the processing method.

Method, system and apparatus for telecommunications control

A services management system, which can provide services to a mobile user, can do so via a combination of network platforms (10). The system uses 'Co-operating Intelligent Software Agent' technology in a heterogeneous agent architecture (25) to provide enough flexibility to deal with changing network constraints, for instance as the user moves. In an example, a fixed broadband network might be used in combination with radio transmitters of a mobile network. The agent architecture (25), involving autonomous agents working co-operatively, forms a layered system using the underlying fixed network (1) for inter-agent communication. In an application, a mobile user might move from a cell of the mobile network which can provide relatively wide bandwidth to one which can only provide limited bandwidth. The service management system can advise the user what services are available in either cell, at what price, based on current bandwidth usage at the two locations. If the user was already using a service which became unavailable in the new cell, the system will advise the user and, if appropriate, put the service effectively on hold until the user enters a cell in which the service is available once more.

Service provision system for communications networks

The invention includes a system for processing telecommunications signaling. Signaling for a call is received into a signaling processor. The signaling processor processes the call and generates new signaling incorporating the processing. The new signaling is transferred to network elements as appropriate. The signaling processor is not coupled to a switch matrix and only communicates with the network elements over signaling links.

System for managing telecommunications

A system to interworking a call between a plurality of networks having different formats. The system has a GR-303 system, an integrated services digital network system, a service platform, and an asynchronous transfer mode system. The system has a signaling processor that is adapted to receive the call signaling and to process the call signaling to select a connection to one of the GR-303 system, the integrated services digital network system, the service platform, or the asynchronous transfer mode system. The signaling processor thereby selects the corresponding system on the connection. The signaling processor transports a control message identifying the selected connection. An interworking unit receives the user communications and the control message. The interworking unit converts the user communications from the format in which it was received to the format that is compatible with the selected system. The user communications are then transported on the selected connection.

System and method for interfacing a local communication device

The universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS) will implement terminal mobility and a form of personal mobility limited to UMTS. The most essential procedures to provide this are related to user registration, location management, handover and security. These mobility procedures are specified using specific functional models. In these models, the required functions are identified and the distribution of the functions in the network is anticipated. In a next step, the specific models are mapped onto a generic functional model. This generic model can be considered as the integration and unification of the specific models. Its structure reflects two important implementation aspects. First, the integration of UMTS into future networks for fixed telecommunications is anticipated. Secondly, the application of the intelligent network architecture for the implementation of the UMTS mobility procedures and service provision is assumed.

Functional models of UMTS and integration into future networks

The authors address the way the most important implementation aspects are taken into account for the development of UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System). After a short introduction to mobility in UMTS and to the applied specification method, the following aspects are discussed: integration into existing and forthcoming networks for fixed communication and the role of intelligent networks (IN).
