Zooplankton biodiversity serves as an ecological indicator of aquatic environment due to their rapid response according to environmental changes. At the present study, impact of seasonal changes on zooplankton biodiversity was conducted in the Ukkadam Lake (Lat 10° 59′ N and Long 76° 57′ E), at Coimbatore city, Tamil Nadu, India. The biodiversity of zooplankton taxa were studied for a period from December 2011 to November 2012 on seasonal basis. During this time period, in total, 28 species of zooplankton were noticed, which includes 9 species of each Rotifera and Cladocera and 5 species of Copepoda and Ostracoda. In this present observation, total abundance of Rotifera was found to be predominant with 35%, followed by Cladocera 29%, Copepoda 29% and Ostracoda 7%. The population density of various group of zooplankton was observed, and it was found to be following order Rotifera > Copepoda > Cladocera > Ostracoda. The high and low population densities were recorded in summer and early monsoon season respectively. This higher zooplankton population density in summer might be due to the temperature acceleration in the Ukkadam Lake. The present study revealed that zooplankton productivity was found to be higher in the Ukkadam Lake when the temperature was increased in summer season. It indicates that the temperature has influence on the zooplankton diversity. Therefore, increased temperature due to global climate change might have influence on the zooplankton production. Assessment of zooplankton biodiversity will be useful to monitor the health (water quality) and wealth (fishery productivity) of this lake system in the near future.

Influence of wild mixed zooplankton on growth and muscle biochemical composition of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii post larvae

The nutritional profiles of wild mixed zooplankton (WMZ) and laboratory cultured Artemia nauplii were compared in the present study. WMZ samples were collected from Sulur lake and Ukkadam lake, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, South India. The WMZ from both lakes and Artemia nauplii were utilized for the estimation of biochemical constituents (protein, carbohydrate, lipid, moisture and ash), profiles of amino acids, and fatty acids. Results showed that the total protein content was found to be significantly (P<0.05) higher in WMZ collected from Ukkadam lake, followed by Sulur lake when compared to Artemia whereas, the total carbohydrate and lipid contents were found to be significant ly (P<0.05) higher in Artemia nauplii than WMZ. While, there was insignificant (P>0.05) difference found in ash and moisture contents in all live feeds evaluated. Profile of amino acids and saturated fatty acids were significantly elevated (P<0.05) in WMZ when compared to Artemia. While, in the case of unsaturated fatty acids showed significant (P<0.05) elevations in WMZ of Ukkadam lake followed by Sulur lake and Artemia. The present results revealed that the WMZ has more desirable dietary nutritional characteristics as larval diets than traditional live feed Artemia nauplii.

Aquatic ecosystems are known to support work to range of organism. Among these zooplanktons are the free floating and microscopic animal found in aquatic ecosystem. The zooplanktons are important for fishes as they are used as source of food. The Zooplanktons are classified in various groups viz. Cladocera, Copepoda, Rotifer and Ostracoda. Many workers have studied the zooplanktons of fresh water bodies both in India and abroad. The biodiversity of phytoplankton and zooplankton are also rich in nature (Kangasabapathi and Rajan, 2010). Zooplanktons are playing important role in biomonitering of water pollution (Tyor et al., 2014). The availability of food is more due to decomposition of organic matter and the density of zooplankton might be high due to fewer predators (Shivashankar et al. 2013). The study of zooplankton is necessary to evaluate the fresh water reservoir in respect to their ecological and fishery status (Goswami and Mankodi, 2012).
