A schematic eye for the mouse, and comparisons with the rat

The orbital apertures of Primates are among the most convergent (i.e., facing in the same direction) among mammals. It is often assumed that orbit convergence is associated with binocular visual field overlap and stereoscopic depth perception in primates. Likewise, it is also assumed that orbit orientation reflects the shape of the visual field across mammals. To date, however, no study has demonstrated that orbit and visual field orientation are correlated, much less comparable, across mammals. In this study, data on orbit convergence were collected for a representative sample of mammals for which data on the extent of the visual field are available. Both standard and phylogenetically controlled comparisons were made. The results demonstrate that orbit convergence and binocular visual field overlap are significantly correlated and display a linear relationship. Based on orbit convergence, Primates as a group have the largest binocular visual fields among mammals.

On the relationship between orbit orientation and binocular visual field overlap in mammals

The visual system of the fat-tailed dunnart (Sminthopsis crassicaudata), a small polyprotodont marsupial, has been examined both anatomically and behaviourally. The ganglion cell layer was examined in cresyl-violet stained wholemounts and found to contain a mean of 81,400 ganglion cells (SD +/- 3,360); the identification of ganglion cells was supported by a correspondence to optic axon counts. Ganglion cells were distributed as a mid-temporally situated area centralis, embedded in a pronounced visual streak. Localised implants of horseradish peroxidase into retinal wholemounts revealed both A-type and B-type horizontal cells. Sections of the outer retina showed it to be rod-dominated, with a rod-to-cone ratio of 40:1 at the area centralis; cones were found to contain oil droplets but double cones were not a prominent feature. The retinal pigment epithelium consisted of squamous cells. Visual acuity, estimated from counts of peak ganglion cell density (8,300/mm2, SD +/- 1,180) and measurements of posterior nodal distance (2.9 mm), was found to be 2.30 cycles per degree. The value was close to that of 2.36 cycles per degree estimated by behavioural tests using a Mitchell jumping stand; values were similar at low, intermediate and high light levels. Our findings are discussed in relation to the lifestyle of the dunnart.

Retinal Structure and Visual Acuity in a Polyprotodont Marsupial, the Fat-Tailed Dunnart (Sminthopsis crassicaudata)

PURPOSE. Subretinal prosthetics are designed to electrically stimulate second-order cells, replacing dysfunctional photoreceptors in diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP). For functional vision to occur, this signal must also reach central visual structures. In the current study, a subretinally implanted prosthetic was evaluated in the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) rat model of RP, to determine its capacity to activate the retinotectal pathway. METHODS. Prosthetic implants were placed in RCS and wildtype (WT) rats at 4 weeks of age and evaluated 3 months later. Control rats underwent sham surgery, implantation with inactive prosthetics, or no treatment. Implant- and visible-evoked responses were isolated and evaluated in the superior colliculus (SC). RESULTS. In WT and RCS rats with active prosthetics, implantdriven responses were found in 100% of WT and 64% of RCS rats and were confined to a small SC region that corresponded to the retinal sector containing the implant and differed from visible-evoked responses. In addition, visible-evoked responses were more robust at sites that received implant input compared to sites that did not. These effects were not seen in WT rats or RCS control animals; although a general trophic effect on the number of responsive sites was observed in all RCS rats with surgery compared to untreated RCS rats. CONCLUSIONS. Direct activation of the retina by a subretinal implant induces activity in the SC of RCS rats, suggesting that these implants have some capacity to replace dysfunctional photoreceptors. The data also provide evidence for implantinduced neurotrophic effects as a consequence of both its presence and its activity in the retina.
