Impacts of additives on performance and emission characteristics of diesel engines during steady state operation

Due to the shortage of the conventional fossil fuels and air pollution from combustion, new, sustainable and cleaner fuel resources are urgently required. Biodiesel has been introduced as a potential and alternative fuel for years. Biodiesel can be produced from different sources such as vegetable oils, animal fat, waste oil, etc. All of them are renewable and do not affect the food security. When biodiesel is used as a fuel resource for diesel engines, the performance and emission characteristics such as brake thermal efficiency (BTE), brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and brake power are almost maintained while hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM) is decreased significantly. However, higher NOx concentration is observed. This disadvantage of using biodiesel or biofuels in general is improved in recent years. The purpose of this work is to do a comprehensive investigation of different approaches applying to biodiesel fueled engine like biodiesel additives, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), water injection (WI), emulsion technology (ET), injection strategy modification, simultaneous technologies (ST), combustion chamber geometry modification and low temperature combustion (LTC) mode. By the way, the impacts of these technologies on engine performance and emission characteristics are summarized. Upon the comparison, using LTC mode is more efficient and feasible than the others. It can reduce both NOx and PM emissions simultaneously by up to 95% and 98%, respectively, while engine performance is slightly reduced. Looking inside the LTC mode, the most efficient model is the reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion system. Applying RCCI combustion model might lead to the increase of CO and HC emissions, but this issue can be easily solved by using some available technologies.

Effect of different technologies on combustion and emissions of the diesel engine fueled with biodiesel: A review

A novel emulsion fuel containing aqueous nano cerium oxide additive in diesel–biodiesel blends to improve diesel engines performance and reduce exhaust emissions: Part I – Experimental analysis

The need for more efficient energy usage and a less polluted environment are the prominent research areas that are currently being investigated by many researchers worldwide. Water-in-diesel emulsion fuel (W/D) is a promising alternative fuel that could fulfills such requests in that it can improve the combustion efficiency of a diesel engine and reduce harmful exhaust emission, especially nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). To date, there have been many W/D emulsion fuel studies, especially regarding performance, emissions and micro-explosion phenomena. This review paper gathers and discusses the recent advances in emulsion fuel studies in respect of the impact of W/D emulsion fuel on the performance and emission of diesel engines, micro-explosion phenomena especially the factors that affecting the onset and strength of micro-explosion process, and proposed potential research area in W/D emulsion fuel study. There is an inconsistency in the results reported from previous studies especially for the thermal efficiency, brake power, torque and specific fuel consumption. However, it is agreed by most of the studies that W/D does result in an improvement in these measurements when the total amount of diesel fuel in the emulsion is compared with that of the neat diesel fuel. NOx and PM exhaust gas emissions are greatly reduced by using the W/D emulsion fuel. Unburnt hydrocarbon (UHC) and carbon monoxide (CO) exhaust emissions are found to be increased by using the W/D emulsion fuel. The inconsistency of the experimental result can be related to the effects of the onset and the strength of the micro-explosion process. The factors that affect these measurements consist of the size of the dispersed water particle, droplet size of the emulsion, water-content in the emulsion, ambient temperature, ambient pressure, type and percentage of surfactant, type of diesel engine and engine operating conditions. Durability testing and developing the fuel production device that requires no/less surfactant are the potential research area that can be explored in future.

An overview of utilizing water-in-diesel emulsion fuel in diesel engine and its potential research study

The effects of in-cylinder water injection on a direct injection (DI) Diesel engine were studied using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program based on the Kiva-3v code. The spray model is validated against experimental bomb data with good agreement for vapor penetration as a function of time. It was found that liquid penetration increased approximately 35% with 23% of the fuel volume replaced by water, due mostly to the increase in latent heat of vaporization. Engine calculations were compared to experimental results and showed very good agreement with pressure, ignition delay and fuel consumption. Trends for emissions were accurately predicted for both 44% and 86% load conditions. Engine simulations showed that the vaporization of liquid water as well as a local increase in specific heat of the gas around the flame resulted in lower Nitrogen Oxide emissions (NOx) and soot formation rates. Using stratified fuel-water injection increases soot at 86% loads due in part to late injection. Because NOx decreased at all loads, the injection timing can be advanced to minimize fuel consumption and soot.
