Multimode molecular dynamics beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation

Nonadiabatic effects play an important role in many areas of physics and chemistry. The coupling between electrons and nuclei may, for example, lead to the formation of a conical intersection between potential energy surfaces, which provides an efficient pathway for radiationless decay between electronic states. At such intersections the Born-Oppenheimer approximation breaks down, and unexpected dynamical processes result, which can be observed spectroscopically. We review the basic theory required to understand and describe conical, and related, intersections. A simple model is presented, which can be used to classify the different types of intersections known. An example is also given using wavepacket dynamics simulations to demonstrate the prototypical features of how a molecular system passes through a conical intersection.

Multimode Molecular Dynamics Beyond the Born‐Oppenheimer Approximation

The MCTDH method has been used successfully to treat the non-adiabatic dynamics of a number of systems. These are hard problems due to the number of modes that need to be included in a calculation, and the strong coupling between the nuclear and electronic motion at conical intersections connecting electronic states in these systems. In this review, an overview of the basic theory of the method is given highlighting how it is able to treat larger systems than other quantum dynamics methods. The vibronic coupling model Hamiltonian is also described, which provides a good starting point for the description of these systems. Examples of calculations made and systems treated are given. Finally, a development of the basic MCTDH method in which some of the usual time-dependent basis functions are replaced by Gaussian wavepackets is outlined. This method promises not only to treat larger systems, but to provide a consistent quantum–semiclassical framework.

Using the MCTDH wavepacket propagation method to describe multimode non-adiabatic dynamics

The spectral intensity for ionization as a function of binding energy for the valence electrons of ethylene, allene, butatriene, trans‐butadiene, acetylene, benzene, methane, ethane, and cyclopropane is computed by a many‐body Green’s function method. The results are used to interpret unidentified structures in experimental ionization spectra. For the ionization out of the inner valence orbitals of the unsaturated molecules the spectral intensity is found to be distributed over several lines, in sharp contrast to the ionization out of the inner valence orbitals of the saturated molecules where the greater part of the intensity appears in one main line. The reasons for this behavior are discussed. It is also found that there is a correspondence between the behavior of the spectral intensity in the inner valence region and the satellite structure in the outer valence region.
