Journal ArticleDOI

Evidence for a charge-shift electrochromic mechanism in a probe of membrane potential

TL;DR: Evidence for a direct response of a probe chromophore to the electric field across membrane systems is presented and the results suggest it might be possible to develop a universal set of membrane probes.
Journal ArticleDOI

A Large Change in Axon Fluorescence that Provides a Promising Method for Measuring Membrane Potential

TL;DR: One of the merocyanine dyes studied gives a rather large signal, easily visible in a single sweep, and could provide a powerful tool for measuring membrane potential in systems where the use of electrodes is inconvenient or impossible.
Journal ArticleDOI

A cyanine dye distinguishes between cycling and non-cycling fibroblasts.

TL;DR: Using fibroblasts in culture conditions chosen to provide various models of cycling and non-cycling cells, it was found that fluorescence intensity with the dye 3,3'-diheptyloxycarbocyanine (Di-O-C7(3)) was consistently greater in the former than the latter.
