A survey is presented of papers and reports that address various aspects of economic dispatch. The time period considered is 1977-88. Four related areas of economic dispatch are identified and papers published in the general areas of economic dispatch are classified into these. Building public confidence in energy planning : a multimethod MCDM approach to demand-side planning at BC gas

The authors deal with the use of successive linear programming (SLP) for the solution of the security-constrained economic dispatch (SCED) problem. They tutorially describe an interior point method (IPM) for the solution of linear programming (LP) problems, discussing important implementation issues that really make this method far superior to the simplex method. A study of the convergence of the SLP technique and a practical criterion to avoid oscillatory behavior in the iteration process are also proposed. A comparison of the proposed method with an efficient simplex code (MINOS) is carried out by solving SCED problems on two standard IEEE systems. The results show that the interior point technique is reliable, accurate, and more than two times as fast as the simplex algorithm. >

A tutorial description of an interior point method and its applications to security-constrained economic dispatch

Multicriteria decision making (MCDM) methods are widely used for comparing alternatives when there are multiple objectives. For instance, utilities use them for resource bidding, externality quantification, facility siting, and resource planning. There are many alternative methods, differing in their ease of use, validity, results, and appropriateness to resource planning. Several MCDM methods are compared in an experiment involving the choice of resource portfolio for Seattle City Light. Planners and interest group representatives applied direct weight assessment, tradeoff weight assessment, additive value functions, and goal programming. Most of the participants concluded that MCDM methods could promote insight and confidence in decision making. However, the authors also confirmed the existence of method biases previously identified by psychologists. No single method emerged as best. Thus, application of two or more methods as consistency checks is recommended to guard against bias, and to stimulate insight. >

Multicriteria methods for resource planning: an experimental comparison

The authors present an analytical method which can incorporate both operating considerations and interconnection constraints in multiarea reliability evaluation. The model, called OPRINS, is a substantial extension and generalization of concepts contained in a single-area OPCON model and the decomposition-simulation approach for multiarea reliability evaluation. These techniques have been implemented in two computer programs called OPRINS-A and OPRINS-P for the study of interconnected systems operating in 'area' or 'pool' modes for commitment of generating units. Some system studies are described which compare the results obtained from this approach with the comparative sequential simulation models. >

A multi-attribute evaluation framework for electric resource acquisition in California

The behaviour of a power system under a transmissionand generation constrained economic dispatch strategy, is simulated over the feasible range of system load using recently developed techniques based on the continuation method. All optimum variables of interest including costs, incremental costs, power generated, power and energy flows, and the Lagrange multipliers of the active variables, can be easily computed as analytic piece-wise linear or quadratic functions of the system load. These results are combined with a load duration curve model of the probabilistic load behaviour to generate duration curve models for all the above variables. The new load duration curves then serve to generate a wide range of probabilistic measures of the system behaviour useful in the estimation of production costs,and in planning.
