Fundamentals of Plasma Physics

Microwave and RF plasmas are finding increasing use in materials processing, plasma chemistry, chemical analysis, and other fields. This is stimulating the search for suitable plasma sources. In the 1970s, electromagnetic surface waves were put to use to sustain plasmas and an efficient microwave device, called a surfatron, was developed for this purpose. Recent work has shown that such discharges can also operate at radio frequencies. A large number of on surface-wave plasmas experimental data have been accumulated-their modelling is well advanced and they have found applications in various fields of research and technology. This paper reviews the physical principles of operation and the design of surface-wave plasma sources. Since the wave launcher is the central component of the source, this review presents a unified description of several compact, efficient, and easy to operate launchers specifically intended for plasma generation that have been developed over the past fifteen years. It is now possible to sustain such plasmas at frequencies ranging from 1 MHz to 10 GHz, in a pressure domain extending from 10-5 Torr up to few times atmospheric pressure, and in a rich variety of plasma vessels and reaction chambers.

Plasma sources based on the propagation of electromagnetic surface waves

Helicon waves are right-hand polarized (RHP) waves which propagate in radially confined magnetized plasmas for frequencies /spl omega//sub ci//spl Lt//spl omega//spl Lt//spl omega//sub ce/ where /spl omega//sub ci/ is the ion cyclotron frequency and /spl omega//sub ce/ is the electron cyclotron frequency. They are part of a much larger family of waves which can propagate down to zero frequency and constitute a very rich field for studying complex propagation characteristics and wave-particle interactions. This paper gives a historical perspective of the waves and their relationship to plasma source development up to the mid 1980s, presents a simple description of their propagation characteristics in free and bounded plasmas, and finishes with their first reported use in plasma processing experiments.

Soliton experiments in plasmas

When we form a structure of plasmas distributed in a certain space in which electromagnetic waves propagate, such a plasma structure serves as a different medium from a homogeneous bulk plasma. We can also enhance or generate novel functions of the plasmas when we add other structural materials such as functional components. That is to say, when we estimate such a medium from the material properties such as permittivity, permeability and conductivity, it shows extraordinary and/or functional effects that arise from the synthesis of the structure. We call such an artificial material a plasma metamaterial. In this review, starting from a fundamental understanding of electromagnetic wave propagation in and around plasmas, we review the new functions of plasmas as metamaterials, including a photonic-crystal-like behavior, a negative refractive index state and a nonlinear bifurcated electric response, by describing specific plasma structures. In addition, we survey some specific applications of such media and predict a feasible scientific expansion of this field in the near future.

Plasmas as metamaterials: a review

When a plasma is of finite transverse cross section, space-charge waves may propagate even in the absence of a drift motion or thermal velocities of the plasma. Some of the properties of these space charge waves have been investigated by regarding the plasma as a dielectric and solving the resulting field equations. The effect of a steady axial magnetic field is considered, but motion of heavy ions and electron temperature effects are neglected. Waves are found to exist at frequencies low compared with the plasma frequency as well as waves with oppositely directed phase and group velocities (backward waves).Many of the features of these waves have been verified experimentally by measuring phase velocity and attenuation of waves along the positive column of a low pressure mercury arc in an axial magnetic field. Measurements of electron density have been made using these waves and the results are compared with those obtained by other methods. An interesting feature of these measurements, of value in plasma diagnostics, is that they can be made with frequencies which are small compared with the plasma frequency.
