Long term treatment with metformin in patients with type 2 diabetes and risk of vitamin B-12 deficiency: randomised placebo controlled trial
Jolien de Jager,Adriaan Kooy,Philippe Lehert,M G Wulffelé,Jan van der Kolk,Daniel Bets,Joop Verburg,Ab J.M. Donker,Coen D.A. Stehouwer +8 more
TL;DR: Long term treatment with metformin increases the risk of vitamin B-12 deficiency, which results in raised homocysteine concentrations, therefore, the findings suggest that regular measurement of vitaminB-12 concentrations during long term met formin treatment should be strongly considered.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-term Effects of Metformin on Metabolism and Microvascular and Macrovascular Disease in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Adriaan Kooy,Jolien de Jager,Philippe Lehert,Daniel Bets,M G Wulffelé,Ab J.M. Donker,Coen D.A. Stehouwer +6 more
TL;DR: These sustained beneficial effects support the policy to continue metformin treatment after the introduction of insulin in any patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus, unless contraindicated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Microvascular function relates to insulin sensitivity and blood pressure in normal subjects
Erik H. Serné,Coen D.A. Stehouwer,Coen D.A. Stehouwer,Jan C. ter Maaten,Jan C. ter Maaten,Piet M. ter Wee,Jan A. Rauwerda,Ab J.M. Donker,Reinold O. B. Gans,Reinold O. B. Gans +9 more
TL;DR: Microvascular function strongly relates to insulin sensitivity and blood pressure, consistent with a central role in linking these variables, and part of the variation in both blood pressure and insulin sensitivity could be explained by microv vascular function.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impaired Skin Capillary Recruitment in Essential Hypertension Is Caused by Both Functional and Structural Capillary Rarefaction
Erik H. Serné,Reinold O. B. Gans,Jan C. ter Maaten,Geert Jan Tangelder,Ab J.M. Donker,Coen D.A. Stehouwer +5 more
TL;DR: In patients with essential hypertension, recruitment of perfused capillaries is impaired, which can be explained by both functional and structural rarefaction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Endothelial Dysfunction Precedes Development of Microalbuminuria in IDDM
TL;DR: Endothelial dysfunction, as estimated by plasma vWF concentration, precedes and may predict the development of microalbuminuria in IDDM.
