Fast and efficient alkaline peroxide treatment to enhance the enzymatic digestibility of steam‐exploded softwood substrates

TL;DR: The enzymatic digestibility of steam-exploded Douglas-fir wood chips was significantly improved using an optimized alkaline peroxide treatment, leaving a cellulose-rich residue that was completely hydrolyzed within 48 h, using an enzyme loading of 10 FPU/g cellulose.

Fermentability of the hemicellulose-derived sugars from steam-exploded softwood (douglas fir)

TL;DR: The best results of hemicellulose recovery and fermentability were obtained for the low-severity water-soluble fraction which was fermented significantly faster than the fraction obtained after medium-severITY treatment probably because it contained higher amounts of fermentation inhibitors.

Sugar recovery and fermentability of hemicellulose hydrolysates from steam-exploded softwoods containing bark.

TL;DR: An extra stage acid hydrolysis and steam explosion at higher severity conditions seem to improve the fermentability of the hydrolysates by transforming certain inhibitory compounds present in the Hydrolysates prepared from the bark‐containing feedstock and thus lowering their inhibitory effect on the yeast used for the ethanol fermentation.
