Smart cities with big data: Reference models, challenges, and considerations

Understanding 'smart cities': Intertwining development drivers with desired outcomes in a multidimensional framework

Millions of sensors continuously produce and transmit data to control real-world infrastructures using complex networks in the Internet of Things (IoT). However, IoT devices are limited in computational power, including storage, processing, and communication resources, to effectively perform compute-intensive tasks locally. Edge computing resolves the resource limitation problems by bringing computation closer to the edge of IoT devices. Providing distributed edge nodes across the network reduces the stress of centralized computation and overcomes latency challenges in the IoT. Therefore, edge computing presents low-cost solutions for compute-intensive tasks. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) enables effective network management by presenting a global perspective of the network. While SDN was not explicitly developed for IoT challenges, it can, however, provide impetus to solve the complexity issues and help in efficient IoT service orchestration. The current IoT paradigm of massive data generation, complex infrastructures, security vulnerabilities, and requirements from the newly developed technologies make IoT realization a challenging issue. In this research, we provide an extensive survey on SDN and the edge computing ecosystem to solve the challenge of complex IoT management. We present the latest research on Software-Defined Internet of Things orchestration using Edge (SDIoT-Edge) and highlight key requirements and standardization efforts in integrating these diverse architectures. An extensive discussion on different case studies using SDIoT-Edge computing is presented to envision the underlying concept. Furthermore, we classify state-of-the-art research in the SDIoT-Edge ecosystem based on multiple performance parameters. We comprehensively present security and privacy vulnerabilities in the SDIoT-Edge computing and provide detailed taxonomies of multiple attack possibilities in this paradigm. We highlight the lessons learned based on our findings at the end of each section. Finally, we discuss critical insights toward current research issues, challenges, and further research directions to efficiently provide IoT services in the SDIoT-Edge paradigm.

Towards a secure service provisioning framework in a Smart city environment

Blockchain and verifiable identities have a lot of potential in future distributed software applications e.g. smart cities, eHealth, autonomous vehicles, networks, etc. In this paper, we proposed a novel technique, namely VeidBlock, to generate verifiable identities by following a reliable authentication process. These entities are managed by using the concepts of blockchain ledger and distributed through an advance mechanism to protect them against tampering. All identities created using VeidBlock approach are verifiable and anonymous therefore it preserves user's privacy in verification and authentication phase. As a proof of concept, we implemented and tested the VeidBlock protocols by integrating it in a SDN based infrastructure. Analysis of the test results yield that all components successfully and autonomously performed initial authentication and locally verified all the identities of connected components.

VeidBlock: Verifiable Identity using Blockchain and Ledger in a Software Defined Network

Cloud computing is an emerging technology that provides elastic and flexible computing resources to the existing capabilities of business world. Besides several benefits of Cloud computing, there are still many challenging issues such as security and privacy of data stored on Cloud and lack of trust on Cloud service providers. Trust is one of the major barriers in the growth and adoption of Cloud by the IT industry due to absence of any reliable and efficient trust evaluation mechanism. Various trust management models have been proposed, but there exists no criteria to evaluate the effectiveness of these models in Cloud computing. In this regard, we have proposed an assessment criterion for the evaluation of trust models, containing the essential features that are mandatory for trust establishment in Cloud environment. We have also presented a detailed analysis of existing trust models and analyzed them with respect to our proposed assessment criteria. The assessment and analysis of trust models helps the customers to select the most appropriate and reliable model in accordance with their preferences and requirements.

Assessment Criteria for Trust Models in Cloud Computing

In Cloud computing, virtualization is the basis of delivering Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) that separates data, network, applications and machines from hardware constraints. Although Cloud computing has been a focused area of research in the last decade, research on Cloud virtualization security has not been extensive. In this paper, different aspects of Cloud virtualization security have been explored. Specifically, we have identified: i) security requirements for virtualization in Cloud computing which can be used as a step towards securing virtual infrastructure of Cloud, ii) attacks that can be launched on Cloud virtual infrastructure, and iii) security solutions to secure the virtualization environment by overcoming the possible threats and attacks.
