Damascene copper electroplating for on-chip interconnections, a process that we conceived and developed in the early 1990s, makes it possible to fill submicron trenches and vias with copper without creating a void or a seam and has thus proven superior to other technologies of copper deposition. We discuss here the relationship of additives in the plating bath to superfilling, the phenomenon that results in superconformal coverage, and we present a numerical model which accounts for the experimentally observed profile evolution of the plated metal.

The limited resources on the planet have forced the rethinking of otherwise straightforward methods of building and selection of masonry materials. This research investigates using solid waste materials from the desert area and adding them to a clay matrix, and their effect on the thermal and mechanical properties of the resulting composite. Clay and fronds were mixed with pits of dates arranged horizontally, vertically, at 45° angles and crushed pits were compared to plain clay bricks in terms of mechanical and thermal properties. Although adding crushed pits greatly enhanced the mechanical properties of clay bricks, making them 85% tougher (greater area under the stress-strain diagram) and 15% stronger (ultimate stress), the composite did not display any enhancement in thermal properties, as the thermal conductivity remained in the range typical of sand and clay. Suitable applications for the composite would be as moulded pliable insulating sheets, or as a filler material.

Experiments on unfired masonry clay bricks mixed with palm fronds and date pits for thermal insulation applications

Graphene is a 2-D carbon material showing considerable prominence in a wide range of optoelectronics, energy storage, thermal and mechanical applications. However, due to its unique features which are typically associated with difficulty in handling (ultra-thin thickness and hydrophobic surface, to name a few), synthesis and subsequent deposition processes are thus critical to the material properties of the prepared graphene films. While existing synthesis approaches such as chemical vapor deposition and epitaxial growth can grow graphene with high degree of order, the costly high temperature and/or high vacuum process prohibit the widespread usage, and the subsequent graphene transfer from the growth substrates for deposition proves to be challenging. Herein, a low-cost one-step synthesis and deposition approach for preparing few-layer graphene (FLG) on flexible copper substrates based on dry ball-free milling of graphite powder is proposed. Different from previous reports, copper substrates are inserted into the milling crucible, thus accomplishing simultaneous synthesis and deposition of FLG and eliminating further deposition step. Furthermore, while all previously reported high energy milling processes involve using balls of various sizes, we adopt a ball-free milling process relying only on centrifugal forces, which significantly reduces the surface damage of the deposition substrates. Sample characterization indicates that the process yields FLG deposited uniformly across all tested specimens. Consequently, this work takes graphene synthesis and deposition a step closer to full automation with simple and low-cost process.

One-step synthesis and deposition of few-layer graphene via facile, dry ball-free milling

This work investigates a surface-hardening technique applied to pure aluminum rods via dry centrifugal milling. The intrinsically hard binary Fe-Cu material powder, also produced by high-energy ball milling, is incorporated into the surface of the samples to enhance their mechanical properties. The process has the rods and Cu-Fe powder placed in the grinding bowl so the deposition takes place under high centrifugal forces. These forces cause the particles integrate uniformly with the surface of the rods according to the process parameters, such as rotational speed, filling ratio, and time. Various microstructural characterization techniques (X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and glow discharge analysis) are applied to investigate the deposition quality, as well as standard tests conducted to assess the improvement of mechanical properties, such as the compression and the micro hardness tests. The results show tangible benefits to the mechanical properties and a significant increase in hardness using this facile process.
