This study investigates the free convection of Casson fluid inside a square cavity with intruded Y-shaped fin at the bottom surface. The Casson fluid is a non-Newtonian fluid and has an infinite viscosity at zero rates of shear. This is the first time that this fluid is used in the square cavity containing Y-shaped fin at the bottom surface. The Y-shaped fin helps in understanding the constructal theory and enhancing the heat transfer rate from the fin. The main objective of using this fin is to increase the convective heat transfer surface area. The sidewalls of the cavity are kept at cold temperature, the bottom surface at a hot temperature, and the top surface as adiabatic. The tips of the Y-shaped fin are considered as hot, cold, and adiabatic. The effects of the magnetic field and radiation are included in the momentum and energy equations. The influence of viscous heating is neglected. The buoyancy term is included in the momentum equation using Boussinesq approximation. The dimensionless governing equations are solved numerically using a Galerkin weighted residual technique of the finite element method. The effects of Rayleigh number (Ra = 104–106), radiation parameter (Rd = 0–103), Hartmann number (Ha = 0–103), and Casson parameter (γ = 0.1–1) on streamlines, isotherms, dimensionless velocity components, temperature, and local Nusselt numbers along the fin and the bottom heated wall are investigated and presented graphically. It is demonstrated that, in the presence of Y-shaped fin, all the pertinent parameters and dimensionless numbers help in enhancing the heat transfer rate along the bottom surface.

Hot areas of the world receive a high amount of solar radiation. As a result, buildings in those areas consume more energy to maintain a comfortable climate for their inhabitants. In an effort to design net-zero energy building in hot climates, PV possesses the unique advantage of generating electrical energy while protecting the building from solar irradiance. In this work, to form a net-zero energy building (NZEB), renewable resources such as solar and wind available onsite for an existing building have been analyzed in a hot climate location. PV and wind turbines in various configurations are studied to form a NZEB, where PV-only systems offer better performance than Hybrid PV Wind systems, based on net present cost (NPC). The self-shading losses in PV placed on rooftop areas are analyzed by placing parallel arrays of PV modules at various distances in between them. The effect on building cooling load by rooftop PV panels as shading devices is investigated. Furthermore, self-shading losses of PV are compared by the savings in cooling loads using PV as shading. In the case study, 12.3% saving in the cooling load of the building is observed when the building rooftop is completed shaded by PV panels; annual cooling load decreased from 3.417 GWh to 2.996 GWh, while only 1.04% shaded losses are observed for fully shaded (FS) buildings compared to those with no shading (NS), as PV generation decreases from 594.39 kWh/m2 to 588.21 kWh/m2. The net present cost of the project has been decreased from US$4.77 million to US$4.41 million by simply covering the rooftop completely with PV panels, for a net-zero energy building.

NPC Based Design Optimization for a Net Zero Office Building in Hot Climates with PV Panels as Shading Device

This study proposes a novel signal detection and modulation optimization scheme using the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) for the Bluetooth voice communication system for the indoor noise environment at Oakland University. It is designed for filtering received signals at the front-end of the receiver stage and established to be robust due to the usage of UKF. The UKF model is capable of handling modulated waveforms represented by the state-space model to reduce the non-Gaussian noise over a multipath fading channel. Moreover, this novel work addresses the characterization of the fading channel with typical non-Gaussian noise, which can be applicable in Bluetooth systems with 802.11b (Wi-Fi) standard interference. The simulation results are used to calculate the bit error rate and frame error rate.

Unscented Kalman Filter for Indoor Bluetooth Voice Transmission Interference over Non-Gaussian Fading Channel

Herein, a series herringbone fed traveling wave quasi-lumped circularly polarized antenna array is presented. The proposed quasi-element antenna comprises a narrow strip inductor parallel to the interdigital capacitor. The inductor was placed at the center finger and shorted across the interdigital capacitor with pad capacitors connected at both ends of the structure. Circular polarization was achieved by feeding the quasi elements at the corners with a 90° phase difference along a travelling wave microstrip feed line. The proposed quasi-lumped element antenna has the potential to realize significant size reductions, and it will ultimately be lightweight, small volume, and inexpensive. The antenna characteristics of the array antenna, including return loss and radiation patterns, were characterized. The size of the antenna structure was 21 mm × 38 mm, allowing for potential use in wireless communication systems that use the 5 GHz ISM band.

A Novel Herringbone Circularly Polarized Quasi Lumped Antenna Array

This paper presents a parsimonious Bayesian indoor wave propagation model for predicting signal power in multi-wall multi-floor complex indoor environments. The received power is modeled as a Bayesian multiple regression model. The parameters of the model are assessed and validated using a two-tier validation strategy in which Bayes factor and posterior probability are used in the first tier and second tier, respectively. The performance of the two-tier strategy is then assessed using Bayesian information criterion. The proposed indoor propagation model is tested in a two-storey building with access points operating at 2.4 GHz.
