Biocomposites reinforced with natural fibers: 2000–2010

Recently, there has been a rapid growth in research and innovation in the natural fibre composite (NFC) area. Interest is warranted due to the advantages of these materials compared to others, such as synthetic fibre composites, including low environmental impact and low cost and support their potential across a wide range of applications. Much effort has gone into increasing their mechanical performance to extend the capabilities and applications of this group of materials. This review aims to provide an overview of the factors that affect the mechanical performance of NFCs and details achievements made with them.

A review of recent developments in natural fibre composites and their mechanical performance

Mouth rinsing a carbohydrate (CHO) solution has been shown to activate receptors within the oral cavity that is related to reward and pleasure centres of the brain. This brain activation is linked to enhance endurance exercise performance. However, it remains unclear, whether the caloric content or the level of sweetness of a solution may influence the level of brain activation during mouth rinse. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effects of varying level of caloric content made up from glucose and fructose on brain activation during mouth rinse. Eleven healthy male participants (Age: 21 ± 2 years; stature: 168 ± 7 cm; body mass: 61.4 ± 6.4 kg; and peak rate of oxygen consumption (VO2max): 51.3 ± 2.2 ml.kg.min-1) volunteered to participate in this study. Participants were randomly assigned to perform 6 trials of mouth rinsing. During each trial, participants were asked to rinse a CHO solution for 10 seconds while fMRI was performed. Three sets of caloric-content solutions were prepared. The first set of caloric-content was at 19 kcal/g consisting 6% of glucose and 5.3% of fructose. The second set was 59 kcal/g consists of 18% of glucose and 15.9% of fructose and the last set was 79 kcal/g consists of 24% of glucose and 21.2% of fructose. The neuroimaging results showed that there was no clear trend on brain activation when rinsing with high caloric content of the CHO solution. However, when rinsing a sweeter solution of fructose, a larger magnitude of the insula/frontal operculum region of the brain was activated. The current observation suggests that the level of sweetness and not the caloric-contents potentially be the main determinant of brain activation.

The Effects of Varying Level of Glucose and Fructose on Brain Activation During Mouth Rinse

Board of Directors (BOD) of corporations is responsible for the company's operational and financial performance apart from its fiduciary duty to fulfill the needs of all stakeholders. In executing their responsibilities, Board members have to make strategic decisions on a broad spectrum of business issues to survive in today's challenging global environment. The efficiency of BOD and effectiveness of their decisions truly depend on the nature and quality of information provided by the Management as they are not the implementers but "overseers" in the management process. Much as the information and communication technology (ICT) has facilitated the flow of information in general, the extent, nature and quality of information provided to BOD have often been in question. This paper seeks to develop a research tool to measure the adequacy of the internal reporting system that provides information to companies' BOD based on seven dimensions; Relevant, Integrated, In perspective, Timely, Reliable, Comparable and Clear. The efficiency and effectiveness of the internal reporting system are evaluated by measuring the gap between the levels of satisfaction that directors have on each of the characteristics with that of the preparers' perception. The instruments to measure those constructs were developed and tested based on a pilot study performed at a Malaysian higher institution of learning. The result will be used to develop measurement tools for evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of an internal reporting system of corporations.

Quality of Information Supplied to Board of Directors: a Case Study on a Malaysian Higher Learning Institution

Oral mucositis (OM) is the oral inflammation as manifestation of chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Cinnamomum osmophloeum (CO), of which the constituents possess anti-inflammatory activities, may have potential to alleviate OM. In this study, laboratory rats were injected with 5-Fluororacil and their oral mucosa were irritated by 18-gauge needle pouching to induce OM. Rats were randomly divided into six experimental groups: without treatment (WT), only 100 mg/mL CO leaf extract (COLE) treatment (100-only), only 5-Fluororacil treatment (5-FU), 5-FU then treated with Triamcinolone acetonide orobase (5-FU+G), 5-FU then treated with 50 mg/mL COLE, and 5-FU then treated with 100 mg/mL COLE (5-FU+100). Body weights and food and water intakes during the experimental period were recorded. Macroscopic examination, histopathological analyses, and serum tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels of these rats were evaluated or determined. No significant difference was found between the WT and 100-only groups. Results of macroscopic examinations, histopathological analyses, body weight changes, food and water intakes, and serum IL-1β and IL-6 levels showed significant therapeutic effects of the 5-FU+100 group compared to the 5-FU group. These finding suggest that COLE can be one of potential remedies for OM therapy through influencing proinflammatory cytokine levels.

Dalam penelitian ini teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah dokumentasi dan studi pustaka.
