Biocomposites reinforced with natural fibers: 2000–2010

Recently, there has been a rapid growth in research and innovation in the natural fibre composite (NFC) area. Interest is warranted due to the advantages of these materials compared to others, such as synthetic fibre composites, including low environmental impact and low cost and support their potential across a wide range of applications. Much effort has gone into increasing their mechanical performance to extend the capabilities and applications of this group of materials. This review aims to provide an overview of the factors that affect the mechanical performance of NFCs and details achievements made with them.

A review of recent developments in natural fibre composites and their mechanical performance

Zingiberaceae are known as valuable herbs with an important role in the prevention and treatment of various diseases. More than 300 species of Zingiberaceae were documented in Borneo. In this study, methanolic extracts of three species of Zingiberaceae (namely, Etlingera velutina, Etlingera belalongensis and Zingiber vinosum) were analysed for their total phenolic and flavonoid contents and cytotoxic activity in vitro. The cytotoxic activities of these extracts were tested against several cancer cell lines, such as hormone dependent breast cancer (MCF-7), non-hormone dependent cancer (MDA-MB-231), ovarian cancer (CaOV3) and cervical cancer (Hela) using MTT assay. Crude extracts from rhizome of E. belalongensis and E. velutina showed significant cytotoxic activity against MDA-MB-231 cell line proliferation, with IC50 values (concentration which inhibit 50% of cell population) of 51.00±4.24 µg/ml and 67.00±9.89 µg/ml, respectively. The methanol extracts were further analysed for the cell cycle analysis using flow cytometry. The results showed that the Etlingera species exhibited higher antioxidant activity and stronger cytotoxic activity in selected cancer cell lines, with the highest cell death accumulated in G1 phase as compared to Zingiber species. Thus, polyphenol phytochemicals could be the major contributors to the cytotoxic activity of these species. As a conclusion, tropical gingers in Borneo investigated in this study have the potential to be developed as anticancer remedies.

The leader is a person that sets the tone and culture in the organization. An effective leader is a person that's able to unify their followers by altering their views and motivations to meet the organization‟s need without compromising the needs of their followers. Leadership is a dynamic process in which one individual influences others to contribute to the achievement of the team task in the organization. Based on a combination of literature review and questionnaire surveys, this paper examine the effect of transformational leadership quality on the companies‟ performance in construction industry in Malaysia. A quantitative research approach was adopted by dissemination developed questionnaires to large sized construction companies registered as grade G7 contractors under CIDB, Malaysia, classification. Questionnaires were sent to 600 randomly selected respondents via postal service and by hand out of a total population of 4,000 G7 contractors out of which 120 (20% response rate) of the questionnaires were returned, completed and useable. The analysis methods in this research were based on multiple regression study. The research found a positive relationship between two transformational leadership qualities namely inspire followers to go beyond their own self-interest and giving employee empowerment with the company‟s performance.

Knowledge management infrastructure capabilities as predictors of project benefits

Background: Patients with cardiac stent have been risk of restenosis. Several studies suggest that diabetes mellitus is the factor that most consistently increases the risk of restenosis. This requires further research with the literature review to analyze the continuity of the journals found. Methods: A literature review searched based on PRISMA, by the process of identification, screening, eligibility, and included. Journals are identified based on their focus and  results. Then screening by analyzing the design, samples, variables, instruments, methods and results. Then assessed for their eligibility using The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal. Results: The total number of journals that reviewed in this study is 15 journals. Six journals stated DM as a restenosis factor, two journals stated BMI as the main factor, four journals mentioned other factors and two journals denied DM was a predictor of restenosis. Conclusion: The results of 15 journals that reviewed, diabetes mellitus was a factor that appeared consistently and had a role in the incidence of restenosis from lifestyle factors or disease history.
