White leg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is known as a prime aquacultural commodity in Indonesia. However, the rapid growth of shrimp farming has resulted in widespread destruction of coastal ecosystems, including mangrove swamps. Intensification of shrimp culture has led to many other environmental problems. Integration of mangroves into aquaculture systems (IMAS) should be considered as a way to preserve the mangrove ecosystem as well as sustainability of the aquaculture business by treating the influent and effluent water. This study aimed to assess the benefits of integrating mangroves into shrimp aquaculture, in terms of water quality. The results showed that temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and nitrite levels in the water significantly differed between sample sites. PCA analysis indicates that total organic matter (TOM), nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia were the principal factors in the overall water quality of the ponds. The highest pollution index was found in the super-intensive shrimp ponds (‘moderately polluted’), while the other sites, including the mangrove area, were categorized as ‘lightly polluted’. These findings suggest that the presence of mangroves may improve the quality of aquaculture wastewater, but the pollution index may still not reach the ‘good’ category. It is therefore recommended that a wastewater treatment plant be installed to support the integrated aquaculture system.

A Water Quality Evaluation of Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture System for Water Treatment in Super-Intensive White Leg Shrimp Pond

One of the main focuses in microbial ecology is the analysis of microbial communities in water, especially concerning bacteria. The results of the analysis related to the abundance of bacteria will be essential knowledge for the development of aquaculture, especially those relating to the dynamics of pond water quality. This study aims to analyze the total abundance of bacteria and water quality dynamics in the water of Litopenaeus vannamei aquaculture that applies a recirculation system. The study was conducted for three months on a concrete pond plot with an area of 2500 m2. Samples of bacterial abundance were taken from pond water, while water quality checks were carried out at ponds and pond outlets. Sampling was carried out at weeks 1, 3, 5, and 8 during the cultivation phase. Bacterial abundance was calculated using Environmental DNA (eDNA), which refers to DNA extracted from the environment without isolating the target organism. The water quality parameters observed were pH, conductivity, DO, turbidity, temperature, and salinity. This study suggested that the abundance of bacteria from the first to the 8th week were 15.3x107; 17.1x107; 36.6x107; and 35.4x107, respectively. Moreover, DO ranged from 3.2 ppm to 7.6 ppm; temperature ranged from 30 °C to 33.3°C; turbidity raged from 12 NTU to 57 NTU; salinity ranged from 19 ppt to 24 ppt; conductivity ranged from 2.93 s/m to 3.54 s/m, and pH ranged from 6.6 to 7.0. This study indicates that the recirculation aquaculture system in Lamongan, East Java may obtain the optimum water quality and controlling the abundance of bacteria to support the aquaculture of Litopenaeus vannamei.

Background : Contamination of freshwater ecosystems has become a major issue as it threatens public water sources as well as aquatic life. It is important to predict changes in organism health, given a known number of environmental factors and pollutant concentrations, in order to better manage contaminants through biomarker analysis. This study aims to examine the ecosystem health of the Brantas River based on its environmental condition and the hematology profile of Gambusia affinis fish present in the river. This species was chosen because of its wide distribution along the Brantas River, and because it is very tolerant, adaptable, highly abundant, and easy to catch. Methods : The study area included 10 sampling sites along the Brantas River watershed. In total, six water quality parameters were observed (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia concentration, and phenol concentration) and hematology measurements consisted of erythrocyte, leucocyte, and micronuclei analyses. Results : The results showed that the upstream area of Brantas River, located in Batu, was the least polluted region, while Mojokerto was the most polluted. The erythrocyte level of Gambusia affinis caught in most sampling sites was quite low. Furthermore, research revealed that the status of Gambusia affinis ' hematological profile was significantly correlated (p<0.05) with water quality parameters, particularly DO, BOD, ammonia, and phenol. Conclusions : It can be concluded from these results that the hematological profile of the fish is poor due to high levels of organic waste and harmful substances.

Effect of environmental factors on blood counts of Gambusia affinis caught at Brantas River watershed, Indonesia

Consortium of endophytic bacteria and rhizobacteria effectively suppresses the population of Pratylenchus coffeae and promotes the growth of Robusta coffee. Biodiversitas 21: 4702-4708. Pratylenchus coffeae as the coffee-parasitic nematode can cause a yield loss from 28.7% to 78.4% on Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora A. Froehner). Environmentally friendly and sustainable efforts can be made to control this nematode by applying the antagonistic agents from the bacterial group. The application of antagonistic agents in a consortium has a better effectivity than a single application. This study was aimed to identify the effectivity of the consortium of endophytic bacteria and rhizobacteria formulated on a cost-effective molasse medium against the P. coffeae population and growth of Robusta coffee in a greenhouse. A total of nine bacterial isolates of genus Bacillus and Pseudomonas were used during experiment. The formulation was prepared by mixing the bacterial suspension and 2% molasses with a ratio of 1:1 (v/v). The greenhouse assay was performed following the completely randomized block design pattern with five treatments and five replications. Robusta coffee plant clone BP 936 was treated with a 10 mL (109 CFU mL-1) bacterial consortium mixture while control was treated with 10 mL sterilized water. Each plant was inoculated with P. coffeae 50 J2 after a week of bacterial consortium application. The result showed that all bacterial consortiums were effective in suppressing the population of P. coffeae in soil and root of Robusta coffee. All consortiums gave a better result than control in suppressing the population of P. coffeae. The best suppression of nematodes was shown by the Cst 02 consortium with the suppression value of 62.5% in the root and 76.1% in the coffee plant rhizosphere. The application of bacterial consortium increases the plant height (28.02-44.51%), number of leaves (127.27-168.18%), and leaf area (278.8-425.57%). In this study, suppression of P. coffeae population by bacterial consortium showed a positive correlation with plant growth. This study presents the information of endophytic bacteria and rhizobacteria consortium from Bacillus and Pseudomonas group that is effective in suppressing the population P. coffeae and improves the growth of Robusta coffee.
