Metal-oxide semiconductors for carbon monoxide (CO) gas sensing: A review

Tremendous effort have recently been made in optimizing the air catalysts of flexible zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Unfortunately, the bottleneck factors in electrolytes that largely limit the working life and energy efficiency of ZABs have long been relatively neglected. Herein, an alkaline gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) is fabricated through multiple crosslinking reactions among poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), poly(acrylic acid), and graphene oxide followed by intense uptake of an alkali and the KI reaction modifier. The prepared GPE exhibits essentially improved properties compared to traditional PVA gel electrolyte in terms of mechanical strength, ionic conductivity, and water retention capability. In addition, the introduced reaction modifier I- in the GPE changes the path of the conventional oxygen evolution reaction, leading to a more thermodynamically favorable path. The optimized GPE enables flexible ZABs exhibiting an exceptionally low charge potential of 1.69 V, a long cycling time of 200 h, a high energy efficiency of 73%, and rugged reliability under different extreme working conditions. Moreover, the successful integration of ZABs in a variety of real wearable electronic devices demonstrates their excellent practicability as flexible power sources.

A Rechargeable Zn–Air Battery with High Energy Efficiency and Long Life Enabled by a Highly Water-Retentive Gel Electrolyte with Reaction Modifier

Dirt and microorganisms are the major problems in textiles which can generate unpleasant odor during their growth. Here, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles prepared by sol-gel method were loaded on the cotton fabrics using spin coating technique to enhance their antimicrobial properties and water repellency. The effects of ZnO precursor concentration, precursor solution pH, number of coating runs, and Mg doping percent on the structures, morphologies, and water contact angles (WCA) of the ZnO-coated fabrics were addressed. At 0.5 M concentration and pH7, more homogeneous and smaller ZnO nanoparticles were grown along the preferred (0 0 2) direction and uniformly distributed on the fabric with a crystallite size 17.98 nm and dislocation density 3.09 × 10−3 dislocation/nm2. The substitution of Zn
 2+
 with Mg
 2+
 ions slightly shifted the (002) peak position to a higher angle. Also, the zeta potential and particle size distribution were measured for ZnO nanoparticle suspension. A superhydrophobic WCA = 154° was measured for the fabric that coated at 0.5 M precursor solution, pH 7, 20 runs and 0% Mg doping. Moreover, the antibacterial activities of the ZnO-coated fabric were investigated against some gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria such as Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus subtilis.

Production and Characterization of Superhydrophobic and Antibacterial Coated Fabrics Utilizing ZnO Nanocatalyst

In this report, the structures, morphologies, optical, electrical and gas sensing properties of ZnO and ZnO: Na spin-coated films are studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results reveal that the films are of a single phase wurtzite ZnO with a preferential orientation along (002) direction parallel to c-axis. Na doping reduces the crystalline quality of the films. The plane surface of ZnO film turned to be wrinkle net-work structure after doping. The reflectance and the optical band gap of the ZnO film decreased after Na doping. The wrinkle net-work nanostructured Na-doped film shows an unusually sensitivity, 81.9% @ 50 sccm, for CO2 gas at room temperature compared to 1.0% for the pure ZnO film. The signals to noise ratio (SNR) and detection limit of Na-doped ZnO sensor are 0.24 and 0.42 sccm, respectively. These enhanced sensing properties are ascribed to high surface-to-volume ratio, hoping effect, and the increase of O- vacancies density according to Kroger VinK effect. The response time increased from 179 to 240 s by the incorporation of Na atoms @50 sccm. This response time increased as the CO2 concentration increased. The recovery time is increased from 122 to 472 s by the incorporation of Na atoms @50 sccm.

Enhanced Gas Sensing Properties of Spin-coated Na-doped ZnO Nanostructured Films.

Spectroscopic, thermal, and electrical properties of MgO/ polyvinyl pyrrolidone/ polyvinyl alcohol nanocomposites

Lead oxide nanoparticles (PbO NPs) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanocomposite films were prepared by sol-gel and solution casting methods respectively. The structural properties of the samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the good dispersion of PbO NPs on the surface of the blend films. CMC film exhibits a transmittance (T) of 72%, increased after mixing with PVP and then decreased to <38% after adding 4.0 wt% PbO NPs. Both the direct and indirect optical band gaps (Eg) of CMC equal to 3.97 and 3.7 eV, respectively. These values were increased after PVP addition and then decreased after loading PbO NPs. The conduction mechanism in CMC/PVP blend has changed from Schottky emission to Poole–Frenkel due to the effects of temperature and PbO NPs content. The effect of adding PVP & PbO NPs on the DC conductivity and the activation energy Ea values of the CMC are discussed. The dielectric constant (e′) was investigated in the frequency and temperature ranges of 1 kHz–1.0 MHz and 293–393 K respectively. Its values depend on both the PbO content and temperature. The AC conductivity σac was increased with increasing PbO content. The correlated barrier hopping (CBH) was found to be the most appropriate mechanism for explaining the AC conduction behavior. Preparation and characterization of PbO/carboxymethyl cellulose/polyvinylpyrrolidone nanocomposite films

Characterization, optical, and nanoscale free volume properties of Na‐CMC/PAM/CNT nanocomposites

The present work reports the influence of Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanorods (NRs) on the physicochemical properties of chitosan (Cs), as an approach to broaden its medical and technological applications. Hematite NRs of 11.4 nm diameter and 87.9 nm crystallite size were prepared by a free-template chemical method. Cs, PVP/Cs and blend loaded with hematite NRs were prepared by solution casting. Significant changes in the films’ surface were clarified using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed the interaction between the NRs and the NH2 and OH functional groups of Cs. DSC measurements showed one endothermic peak assigned to the water elimination, and an exothermic one, in the range 268–287 °C, attributed to the decomposition of saccharine structure in Cs. The swelling properties of the films were sensitive to the pH of the solution. PVP/Cs film showed ~ 85% transmittance in the visible region and its optical band gap narrowed from 5.4 eV to 4.05 eV after loading with 2.0 wt.% hematite. The influence of NRs content on the optical constants of the films is discussed. The dielectric properties depend on the film’ structure. The large Polaron tunneling (LPT) model is the best suitable mechanism for the electric conduction. Due to their high thermal stability and decomposition temperature, transmittance and high conductivity, the prepared films are a candidate for the packaging industry, for use in some medical applications such as treating some chronic wounds, and optical windows and fibers.
