Estimation of crop and forest biomass resources in a semi-arid region using satellite data and GIS

Abstract Background This study analysed the multi-temporal trend in land cover, and modelled a future scenario of land cover for the year 2030 in the highly urbanized state of Selangor, Malaysia. The study used a Decision Forest-Markov chain model in the land change modeller (LCM) tool of TerrSet software. Land cover maps of 1999, 2006 and 2017 were classified into 5 classes, namely water, natural vegetation, agriculture, built-up land and cleared land. A simulated land cover map of 2017 was validated against the actual land cover map 2017. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) value of 0.84 of Total Operating Characteristics (TOC) and higher percentage of components of agreement (Hits + Correct rejection) compared to components of disagreement (Misses + False alarm + Wrong hits) indicated successful validation of the model. Results The results showed between the years 1999 to 2017 there was an increase in built-up land cover of 608.8 km 2 (7.5%), and agricultural land 285.5 km 2 (3.5%), whereas natural vegetation decreased by 831.8 km 2 (10.2%). The simulated land cover map of 2030 showed a continuation of this trend, where built-up area is estimated to increase by 723 km 2 (8.9%), and agricultural land is estimated to increase by 57.2 km 2 (0.7%), leading to a decrease of natural vegetation by 663.9 km 2 (8.1%) for the period 2017 to 2030. The spatial trend of land cover change shows built-up areas mostly located in central Selangor where the highly urbanized and populated cities of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya and the Klang valley are located. Conclusion The future land cover modelling indicates that built-up expansion mostly takes place at edges of existing urban boundaries. The results of this study can be used by policy makers, urban planners and other stakeholders for future decision making and city planning.

Multi-temporal analysis of past and future land cover change in the highly urbanized state of Selangor, Malaysia

Cities are critically facing massive unplanned urbanization over the globe especially in developing and under developed countries. To address the swift expansion of impervious surface and to control its pattern is a foremost challenge for policy makers and urban planners because of the lack of database of urban transformation. This present work dealing with the urban transformation challenge and proposes a modelling approach of the urban trajectory (UT) pattern and its effects (on other land covers) namely, the cycle of urban development, to unfold the transformation of urban expansion in city sphere using spatiotemporal Landsat datasets during 1988-2018 for 1998, 1997, 2008, and 2018 (~10 years interval). The pattern of UT expansion is framed using landscape metrics: patch size quantification based on pre-growth patch and newly-grown patch. We have modelled six categories (i.e., (i) Leapfrog, (ii) Edge, (iii) Inside Edge, (iv) Ribbon, (v) Infilling, (vi) Infilled) to understand how the cycle has been working and possibly effects on the land cover. Furthermore, we have carried out Hot Spot zone analysis for UT growth dominant area identification. The UT results have found, the most expanded was Edge trajectory and least expanded was Infilling trajectory in all time periods. The overall urban expansion has been seen from 25.40% in 1988 to 64.61% in 2018. The result of the growth of an urban nucleus, the ratio of total sprawls expansion to total nucleus area has been found to be 154.34% during 1988-2018. The results of hot spot zone analysis have found that the zones of 1500 m–7000 m urbanized most rapidly during 1988-2018.

River morphometry is a useful approach in basin analysis which helps to interprets fluvially originated landforms. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the morphometric and morphotectonic parameters along with prioritization for soil erosion and water availability in Chite Lui watershed. Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is a useful approach to find out soil erosion and ground water potential zone with an aim to achieve successful management of a watershed. It helps to examine the susceptibility zone in watershed. The present paper documents the delineation of 14 sub-watersheds in Chite Lui River at 3rd order stream. Its prioritization has been performed using several morphometric parameters namely drainage density, elongation ratio and many other parameters using Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP). Sub-watersheds are ranked from 1–14 based on soil erosion and groundwater potential zones. The Chite Lui watershed is a fifth order drainage basin with a total area of 52.7 km2. The tectonic parameters of the watershed as the asymmetry value is 34%, indicates the structural control over the area either by uplift or tilting. The hypsometric integral value is 0.5 and the valley width height ratio is 0.05 which also suggest tectonic activity in the area. Sinuosity related many parameters along with geomorphic indices like stream power index (SPI), stream gradient index (SL) and topographic wetness index (TWI) were also calculated to suggest the watershed health. The present paper shows that the morphometric analysis is highly relevant and efficient in delineating susceptibility zones.

Geomorphic Analysis, Morphometric-based Prioritization and Tectonic Implications in Chite Lui River, Northeast India

In the present paper, morphometric and morphotectonic attributes of Sindh basin of Central India were attempted. The remotely sensed Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data were used to extract drainage, density and contour maps. The drainage of Sindh and its subwatersheds exhibiting dendritic pattern show mean bifurcation ratio ranging from 3.85 to 5.66. It reveals that the drainage flowing in hilly and dissected area is geologically and structurally controlled. The low density (0.82) and frequency (0.4) implies that the basin is consisting of coarse permeable soil with dense vegetation. The values of elongation and form factor ratio infer that the basin is elongated and less prone to erosion. The ruggedness values infer that the Sindh basin is slightly rugged and less prone to erosion and sediment transport. The drainage orientations of Sindh River and its subwatersheds showing polymodal distribution are represented by highly conspicuous NNE-SSW and NNW-SSE trends. The four sets of major lineaments trending NE-SW, NW-SE, WNW-ESE and NNW-SSE are observed in the Sindh basin. The high density of lineaments represented by fractures, faults, foliations and bed rock structures are controlling the drainage of low order streams. The high order NE-SW trending streams show major tectonic control.
