Journal ArticleDOI

Biomimetics: its practice and theory.

TL;DR: It is shown that TRIZ, the Russian system of problem solving, can be adapted to illuminate and manipulate this process of transfer of ideas and analogues from biology to technology.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reprap ??? the replicating rapid prototyper

TL;DR: The background reasoning that led to the invention of the RepRap project, the selection of the processes that have been used to implement it, the designs of key parts of the machine and how these have evolved from their initial concepts and experiments, and estimates of themachine's reproductive success out in the world up to the time of writing.
Journal ArticleDOI

A novel pH- and ionic-strength-sensitive carboxy methyl dextran hydrogel

TL;DR: Scanning electron microscopy of these hydrogels showed that pH-dependent changes in permeability are mirrored by morphological changes in gel structure, and the effect of changes of pH and ionic strength on the hydrogel's permeability was shown to be reversible.
Journal ArticleDOI

Jumping robots: a biomimetic solution to locomotion across rough terrain

TL;DR: The authors present two new biologically inspired jumping robots, Jollbot and Glumper, both of which incorporate additional locomotion techniques of rolling and gliding respectively, and demonstrate that this can be achieved through optimization and careful materials selection.
