Study on cuscus hunting as a form of wildlife utilization by Biak ethnic group surrounding the North Biak Strict Nature Reserce (CABU) was carried out through direct observation and interview with hunter respondents and other key respondents among four villages that purposively chosen i.e. Inswambesi, Kayomi, Wasani, dan Sansundi at the Warsa District of Biak Numfor, Papua. Two species of cuscus occurs in the study site were common cuscus (Phalanger orientalis) and spotted cuscus (Spilocuscus maculatus) and they were observed as hunting target in CABU. Hunting was performed partly as routine activity used various traditional tools (slash blade, trap, spear, and calling cuscus) and modern weapon (firearm). Cuscus hunting was done to supply animal protein for households, inspite some hunting results raised for consumption and market purposes. For one period of hunting 3-4 cuscus were caught and it was lower than five years ago. It was indicated that the population condition was vulnerable on overharvest and at the present time cuscus population tend to decreased. Traditional wisdom of Biak ethnic group should be explored and practiced again as the form of local law in order to manage cuscus hunting for the future cuscus conservation program. Cuscus (Phalangeridae) Hunting by Biak Ethnic Group in Surrounding North Biak Strict Nature Reserve, Papua

Biodiversitas 20: 526-531. One of the problems in maintaining cuscus in captivity was feed factor. Farmers had given various combinations of feed for cuscus, and several studies had been conducted on cuscus feed. For cuscus feed, it mostly used more than two types of feed, and the most dominant was banana. Inefficiency occurred fresh feed was prepared with more than two types. It can be costly, time-consuming and has more digestibility problem. Therefore, it was necessary to conduct an assessment by limiting the number of feed in two types to see the benefits of the ration (70% carbohydrate feed sources Musa paradisiaca var. mas and 30% from Pometia pinnata leaves, Pongamia pinnata leaves, Ipomoea aquatica, Brassica rapa var. parachinensis and Gryllus spp. The research was conducted for 36 days consisting of 2 periods, namely the adaptation period (5 days) and the data collection period (7 days), 3 times replications. The amount of feeding was limited based on 90% of adequacy of dry matter (preliminary research). The weighting of the initial body weight of cuscus and the final weight was carried out at the beginning and end of the period of data collection. Faecal was collected every day during the period of data collection. Each type of feed and fecal was analyzed for the dry matter. The results showed no significant effect (P>0.01) on dry matter consumption, but significantly affected the digestibility coefficients of dry matter. The preferred ration was 100% M. paradisiaca var. mas, which 49.99g/day, then a combination of M. paradisiaca var. mas with I. aquatica 48.187 g/day and M. paradisiaca var. mas combination with Averrhoa carambola (48.06 g/day), while the less preferred combination was M. paradisiaca var. mas with leaves from forest plants and combination of M. paradisiaca var. mas and animal protein feed sources i.e. Gryllus spp. However, the highest digestibility coefficient was achieved in 100% M. paradisiaca var. mas and M. paradisiaca var. mas combine with Gryllus spp. Furthermore, the relationship between digestibility coefficient and body weight gain showed that the combination of M. paradisiaca var. mas and Gryllus spp. had higher body weight gain compared to 100% Musa paradisiacal var. mas. Based on this study it was concluded that cuscus required a combination of carbohydrate feed sources and animal protein feed sources obtained from M. paradisiaca var. mas and Glyllus spp.

Short Communication: Effect of different feed combination on the growth development of spotted cuscus (Spilocuscus maculatus) in captivity

Forest plants selection as feed sources and nesting tree of obi cuscus (Phalanger rothschildi thomas, 1898) in Obi islands, North Maluku

Background: The mountain ecosystem in Mutis Timau Nature Reserve, Oelmuke Village, has a high diversity of flowering plants but has not been recorded. Inventaritation of the flowering plant provides reference information for area conservation. This study aims to inventory the types and uses of flowering plants by the community and other potential benefits in the Mutis Timau Nature Reserve, Oelmuke Hamlet, East Nusa Tenggara. Method: This research was conducted in August 2019 in Oelmuke Village, East Nusa Tenggara. The plant collection was conducted using an experimental method along the Oelmuke Village area. The information on the use of flowering plants by the community using the interview method and information about other potential uses using the literature review method. Result: The flowering plants inventoried from Oelmuke Village is 31 species from 15 families that have been used as food, animal feed, building materials, medicinal materials, ornamental plants, hedge plants, firewood, and cigarette raw materials, and textile materials. Other potential uses are as an accumulator of Pb waste and dye for woven fabrics. Conclusions: The 31 species of plants that have been inventoried have been used by the community as food, animal feed, building materials, medicinal materials, ornamental plants, hedges, firewood, cigarette raw materials, and textile materials and other potential uses are accumulator Pb waste and dyes for woven fabrics

Diversity and Potential of Flowering Plants in Timau Mutis Nature Reserve, Tasinifu Village

Studies on nesting site and feed selection of cuscus in Northern Biak Nature Reserve, Biak Numfor level two district, Papua was conducted from August to September 2003. The result showed 57 species of plant used as cuscus feed sources and 11 species of plants as their nesting site. Parts of the plants being consumed were fruit (76,1%), leaves (13,4%), flowers (9%), and shoot (1,5%). The night watched identified two species of cuscus, namely common cuscus (Phalanger orientalis Pallas), and spotted cuscus (Spilocuscus maculatus Desmarest). Direct threat for their conservation were due to hunting pressure by outer conservation area people, specially Biak city people, as just for laugh.Key words: Cuscus, family Phalangeridae, feed sources, nesting site, Northern Biak Nature Reserve
