Machine Learning is the study of methods for programming computers to learn. Computers are applied to a wide range of tasks, and for most of these it is relatively easy for programmers to design and implement the necessary software. However, there are many tasks for which this is difficult or impossible. These can be divided into four general categories. First, there are problems for which there exist no human experts. For example, in modern automated manufacturing facilities, there is a need to predict machine failures before they occur by analyzing sensor readings. Because the machines are new, there are no human experts who can be interviewed by a programmer to provide the knowledge necessary to build a computer system. A machine learning system can study recorded data and subsequent machine failures and learn prediction rules. Second, there are problems where human experts exist, but where they are unable to explain their expertise. This is the case in many perceptual tasks, such as speech recognition, hand-writing recognition, and natural language understanding. Virtually all humans exhibit expert-level abilities on these tasks, but none of them can describe the detailed steps that they follow as they perform them. Fortunately, humans can provide machines with examples of the inputs and correct outputs for these tasks, so machine learning algorithms can learn to map the inputs to the outputs. Third, there are problems where phenomena are changing rapidly. In finance, for example, people would like to predict the future behavior of the stock market, of consumer purchases, or of exchange rates. These behaviors change frequently, so that even if a programmer could construct a good predictive computer program, it would need to be rewritten frequently. A learning program can relieve the programmer of this burden by constantly modifying and tuning a set of learned prediction rules. Fourth, there are applications that need to be customized for each computer user separately. Consider, for example, a program to filter unwanted electronic mail messages. Different users will need different filters. It is unreasonable to expect each user to program his or her own rules, and it is infeasible to provide every user with a software engineer to keep the rules up-to-date. A machine learning system can learn which mail messages the user rejects and maintain the filtering rules automatically. Machine learning addresses many of the same research questions as the fields of statistics, data mining, and psychology, but with differences of emphasis. Statistics focuses on understanding the phenomena that have generated the data, often with the goal of testing different hypotheses about those phenomena. Data mining seeks to find patterns in the data that are understandable by people. Psychological studies of human learning aspire to understand the mechanisms underlying the various learning behaviors exhibited by people (concept learning, skill acquisition, strategy change, etc.).

Data Mining Practical Machine Learning Tools and Techniques

The stability control of nominal frequency and terminal voltage in an interconnected power system (IPS) is always a challenging task for researchers. The load variation or any disturbance affects the active and reactive power demands, which badly influence the normal working of IPS. In order to maintain frequency and terminal voltage at rated values, controllers are installed at generating stations to keep these parameters within the prescribed limits by varying the active and reactive power demands. This is accomplished by load frequency control (LFC) and automatic voltage regulator (AVR) loops, which are coupled to each other. Due to the complexity of the combined AVR-LFC model, the simultaneous control of frequency and terminal voltage in an IPS requires an intelligent control strategy. The performance of IPS solely depends upon the working of the controllers. This work presents the exploration of control methodology based on a proportional integral–proportional derivative (PI-PD) controller with combined LFC-AVR in a multi-area IPS. The PI-PD controller was tuned with recently developed nature-inspired computation algorithms including the Archimedes optimization algorithm (AOA), learner performance-based behavior optimization (LPBO), and modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO). In the earlier part of this work, the proposed methodology was applied to a two-area IPS, and the output responses of LPBO-PI-PD, AOA-PI-PD, and MPSO-PI-PD control schemes were compared with an existing nonlinear threshold-accepting algorithm-based PID (NLTA-PID) controller. After achieving satisfactory results in the two-area IPS, the proposed scheme was examined in a three-area IPS with combined AVR and LFC. Finally, the reliability and efficacy of the proposed methodology was investigated on a three-area IPS with LFC-AVR with variations in the system parameters over a range of Â ± 50%. The simulation results and a comprehensive comparison between the controllers clearly demonstrates that the proposed control schemes including LPBO-PI-PD, AOA-PI-PD, and MPSO-PI-PD are very reliable, and they can effectively stabilize the frequency and terminal voltage in a multi-area IPS with combined LFC and AVR.

In this paper, the robust stabilization and synchronization of a novel chaotic system are presented. First, a novel chaotic system is presented in which this system is realized by implementing a sigmoidal function to generate the chaotic behavior of this analyzed system. A bifurcation analysis is provided in which by varying three parameters of this chaotic system, the respective bifurcations plots are generated and evinced to analyze and verify when this system is in the stability region or in a chaotic regimen. Then, a robust controller is designed to drive the system variables from the chaotic regimen to stability so that these variables reach the equilibrium point in finite time. The robust controller is obtained by selecting an appropriate robust control Lyapunov function to obtain the resulting control law. For synchronization purposes, the novel chaotic system designed in this study is used as a drive and response system, considering that the error variable is implemented in a robust control Lyapunov function to drive this error variable to zero in finite time. In the control law design for stabilization and synchronization purposes, an extra state is provided to ensure that the saturated input sector condition must be mathematically tractable. A numerical experiment and simulation results are evinced, along with the respective discussion and conclusion.

Robust Stabilization and Synchronization of a Novel Chaotic System with Input Saturation Constraints

Vertebral column diseases are of the main public health problems which cause a negative impact on patients. Disk hernia and spondylolisthesis are examples of pathologies of the vertebral column which cause intensive pain. Data mining tools play an important role in medical decision making and deal with human short-term memory limitations quite effectively. This paper presents a decision support tool that can help in detection of pathology on the vertebral column using three types of decision trees classifiers. They are Single Decision Tree (SDT), Boosted Decision Tree (BDT), and Decision Tree Forest (DTF). Decision Tree and Regression (DTREG) software package is used for simulation and the database is available from UCI Machine Learning Repository. The performance of the proposed structure is evaluated in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, ROC curves, and other metrics. The results showed that the accuracies of SDT and BDT in the training phase are 90.65 and 96.77 %, respectively. BDT performed better than SDT for all performance metrics. Value of ROC for BDT in the training phase is 0.9952. In the validation phase, BDT achieved 84.84 % accuracy, which is superior to SDT (81.94 %) and DTF (84.19 %). Results showed also that grade of spondylolisthesis is the most relevant feature for classification using BDT classifier.

Boosted Decision Trees for Vertebral Column Disease Diagnosis

The blood urea concentration has been used as a surrogate marker for toxin elimination in hemodialysed patients, and several indices based on it have been proposed in recent years for monitoring treatment adequacy. Measuring urea nitrogen concentrations at the inlet and outlet of dialyser is crucial to evaluate the in-vivo blood side dialyser urea clearance during hemodialysis. Although frequent measurement is needed to avoid inadequate dialysis efficiency, artificial intelligence can repeatedly perform the forecasting tasks and may be a satisfactory substitute for laboratory tests. Neuro-fuzzy technology represents a promising forecasting application in clinical medicine. In this study, two fuzzy models have been proposed to predict dialyser inlet and outlet urea concentrations in order to estimate dialyser clearance without blood sampling. The model is of multi-input single-output MISO type. Multi-adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system MANFIS technique of fuzzy-based systems has been employed. The performance of the model is authenticated by evaluating the predicted results with the practical results obtained by conducting the confirmation experiments. The results suggest that the neuro-fuzzy technology, based on limited clinical parameters, is an excellent alternative method for accurately predicting arterial and venous urea concentrations in hemodialysis patients. The proposed model can be used for intelligent online adaptive system.
