Journal ArticleDOI
Modelling the global competing risks of a potential interaction between injectable hormonal contraception and HIV risk.
Ailsa R. Butler,Jennifer A. Smith,Chelsea B. Polis,Simon Gregson,David C. Stanton,Timothy B. Hallett +5 more
TL;DR: If IHC use increases HIV acquisition risk, reducing IHC could reduce new HIV infections; however, this must be balanced against other important consequences, including unintended pregnancy, which impacts maternal and infant mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Heterosexual anal intercourse: a neglected risk factor for HIV?
Rebecca F. Baggaley,Dobromir T. Dimitrov,Branwen N. Owen,Branwen N. Owen,Michael Pickles,Ailsa R. Butler,Ben Masse,Ben Masse,Marie-Claude Boily +8 more
TL;DR: The current state of knowledge of heterosexual anal intercourse practice worldwide is reviewed and the information required to assess its role in HIV transmission within heterosexual populations is identified, including input measures required to inform mathematical models.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence and Frequency of Heterosexual Anal Intercourse Among Young People: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Branwen N. Owen,Patrick M. Brock,Ailsa R. Butler,Michael Pickles,Michael Pickles,Marc Brisson,Rebecca F. Baggaley,Marie-Claude Boily,Marie-Claude Boily +8 more
TL;DR: Overall summary estimates of lifetime AI prevalence were 22 % (95 % confidence interval 20–24) among sexually active young people, with no statistically significant differences by gender, continent or age.
Journal ArticleDOI
What Proportion of Female Sex Workers Practise anal Intercourse and How Frequently? A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Branwen N. Owen,Rebecca F. Baggaley,Jocelyn Elmes,Jocelyn Elmes,Amy Harvey,Zara Shubber,Ailsa R. Butler,Romain Silhol,Peter A. Anton,Barbara L. Shacklett,Ariane van der Straten,Ariane van der Straten,Marie-Claude Boily +12 more
TL;DR: Although varied, AI among FSW is generally common, inconsistently protected with condoms and practiced sufficiently frequently to contribute substantially to HIV acquisition in this risk group.
Journal ArticleDOI
Could misreporting of condom use explain the observed association between injectable hormonal contraceptives and HIV acquisition risk
Jennifer A. Smith,Renee Heffron,Ailsa R. Butler,Connie Celum,Jared M. Baeten,Timothy B. Hallett +5 more
TL;DR: Differential condom misreporting can theoretically produce inflated HR^ values for an association between HC and HIV even without a true association, but to produce a doubling of HIV risk that is entirely spurious requires substantially different levels of misreporting among HC users and nonusers, which may be unrealistic.
