The Plants of the genus Fagonia have been broadly utilized as adjunctive therapy, to treat several conditions involving high fever, diabetes, asthma, stoma chache, dental pain, and renal problems using their aqueous extracts as medicines. This genus is a valuable source that comprises a variety of Triterpenes, flavonoids, and Saponins. The herbal chemistry as well as the biological action of Fagonia species have been a candidate for many researchers. The in vivo pharmacological screening of their extracts has manifested some other significant properties such as cytotoxic and anti-cancer activity. This review study has gathered the important research that has been carried out on the species that grow in Libya. It includes an exhaustive survey of literature about the medicinal value and the bioactivities of various extracts obtained from these Fagonia species using references from major databases.

Abstract The use of the green approach for nanoparticle synthesis yielded noticeable concern due to its eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and reduced production of toxic chemicals. The current study was designed to formulate Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) by using Fagonia cretica extracts, evaluating its phytochemical content, and different biological activities. Four different solvents; methanol (MeOH), n-Hexane (n–H), aqueous (Aq), and ethyl acetate (EA), had been utilized in the extracting method. ZnO NPs were successfully synthesized and characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The UV–vis spectra showed absorbance peaks between 350–400 nm range and SEM analysis revealed spherical morphology with particle sizes ranging from 65–80 nm. In phytochemical analysis, crude extracts exhibited the highest phytochemical content as they contain enriched secondary metabolites. n-hexane extract showed the highest phenolic contents while aqueous extracts showed the highest flavonoid content. Maximum free radicle scavenging activity was observed in NPs synthesized from ethyl-acetate extract with an IC 50 value of 35.10 µg/ml. Significant antibacterial activity was exhibited by NPs polar solvents against K. pneumonae , E. coli, and B. subtilis. Polar solvents showed considerable antifungal potential against A. flavus and F. solani . NPs synthesized from nH extract showed potential cytotoxic activity with an LC 50 value of 42.41 µg/ml against brine shrimps. A noteworthy antidiabetic activity was exhibited by nanoparticles synthesized from methanol extract i.e., 52.61 ± 0.36%. Significant bald zones were observed in nanoparticles synthesized from methanol extract rendering protein kinase inhibition. The present study highlights the significance of F. indica as a natural source for synthesizing functional nanoparticles with substantial antioxidant, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, protein kinase inhibitory, and antidiabetic properties.

Comparative evaluation of biomedical and phytochemical applications of zinc nanoparticles by using Fagonia cretica extracts

The aim of this study was to verify the pharmacological effect(s) of the Fagonia cretica linn (Zygophyllaceae) ethanolic extract and to determine the mechanism(s) underlay its action using isolated rabbit intestine. The cumulative dose-response curves of the Fagonia cretica extract and standard adrenaline were constructed using different doses ranged (10 -3 - 10 2 µg/ml), and (10 -9 - 10 -5 M) alone, and in the presence of a single dose of a blocker, then the values of EC50, Emax and pA2 were determined as mean ± S.E.M, and compared statistically. The adrenergic non-selective blockers, phentolamine and propranolol in concentrations of (10 -8 and 10 -5 M) were used to elucidate the exact mechanism mediating the relaxant effect of the ethanolic extract of Fagonia cretica linn. Results revealed that Fagonia cretica exhibited a dose-dependent relaxant activity on rabbit intestine similar to that produced by standard adrenaline with, Emax= [56.4 ± 7.5], [7.2 ± 4.3] and EC50= [0.12 ± 0.27], [9.85 ± 1.6] x 10 -6
