The purpose of this article is to analyze the effect of hotel innovations on firm value. Specifically, this study fills a research gap in the previous literature by examining this effect through market value and by distinguishing the potentially different impacts of distinct innovation types: product, process, organization and marketing. This research contributes to consolidating the empirical evidence of hotel innovation and performance by analyzing whether distinct types of innovation lead to different levels of results. The findings show that innovations are perceived to have a positive impact on the future sales of the company: in a four-day period (0,+3), there is an increase in stock exchange returns of 1.53%. In terms of innovation types, process and marketing innovations are found to have a higher positive effect on hotel market value than product and organization innovations; which is explained by potential cost differences among innovations.

Though change is often problematic and complicated by circumstance, and in the case of disaster profoundly damaging, it can also be an opportunity to improve otherwise intractable systemic problems. With that in mind, this chapter defines the nature of change as viewed through the lens of resilience and further outlines the relationship between resilience, adaptation, and transformation. Because change is often negative, strategies to build resilience are rationally directed towards coping with its consequences or resisting it outright. Similarly, because change is complicated, with many inter-connected parts, it is difficult to prepare for even when its causes are well understood. Most contemporary theories of resilience recognize the role of complexity, risk and vulnerability, but there is not yet a strong understanding of how to manage change as it impacts groups differently across scales, from local communities to regions, or even nations. The authors propose that resilience planning and theory can be improved by acknowledging the complexities of the adaptive cycle and panarchy in particular. The chapters of the book are offered as case studies and amplification of this idea, either in practice or in theory, from the perspective of multiple fields. The point of view is global, but includes informative chapters written by Japanese contributors who focus on the unprecedented change brought about by the 2011 Tohoku disaster in northern Japan. This perspective is often missing in such collections primarily because of the language barrier.

This article discusses the challenges posed in implementing and enforcing environmental protection measures in Malaysia. The discussion begins with general background information regarding the problems faced by the Malaysian government in overcoming environmental problems arising from poorly planned development activities. Policies providing the basis for passing laws and regulations to promote environmental protection have been formulated to manage the post independence environmental problems. However, the post independence economic policies formulated by the government are often blamed as the principal reason for the present persisting environmental problems. Introduction of various legal and non-legal environmental protection measures have not been able to prevent further environmental degradation. Despite commitments to the objective of preserving and enhancing environmental quality and passing of laws and regulations to achieve the means, Malaysia is still faced with the problem of the competing demands of greater urban development and conserving the environment. The commitment to integrate environment and economic policies at present is slightly hesitant owing to a misunderstood concept that preservation of environment means limited development. It is often pointed out that the actual problem lies in implementing and enforcing the law. The effectiveness of the legal mechanism adopted by the country is dampened by the constraints that exist within the legal and institutional framework. This article will examine these factors as well as suggest measures to improve the implementation and enforcement of the environmental protection measures so as to achieve sustainable development.

One of the most nagging problems in Africa today in general and countries under review in particular is the struggle for sustainable development. The paper discusses this aspect and contends that sustainable development in the countries under review is achievable through adequate protection of socio-economic rights. There are, however, prospects and some challenges for sustaining development through the instrumentality of socioeconomic rights. The paper makes an analytical exposition of these challenges and hypothesizes that if these challenges are surmounted, the countries will experience sustainable development through adequate protection of socio-economic rights.
