Industrial revolution 4.0 is currently present in various countries, including Indonesia. Indonesia responded quickly through technological developments, especially education. The actions of the Indonesian government to deal with industrial 4.0 are contained in the 4C principle, one of which is Critical Thinking. The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning approach has become an alternative in building critical thinking skills, especially in science learning. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively measure the impact of the STEM-inquiry model based on the K-13 Indonesian Curriculum towards critical thinking skills of 15-16 years old students. This study employed quasi-experimental with non-equivalent control group design at SMAN 1 (State Senior High School) Padang Cermin, Lampung, Indonesia. The research subjects consisted of 50 students. The critical thinking skill was measured through 10 items of an essay question on the momentum and impulse material. Based on the results of the non-parametric statistical hypothesis test Mann Whitney, the significance level of 0.004 was obtained (sig <0.05). The results of the hypothetical test showed that the student's critical thinking skills before and after using the STEM-based inquiry model were different. It can be concluded that the application of the STEM-based inquiry model was effective in increasing students' critical thinking skills.

The Effectiveness of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics-Inquiry Learning for 15-16 Years Old Students Based on K-13 Indonesian Curriculum: The Impact on the Critical Thinking Skills

The current real condition in Indonesia, reading has not become a daily culture of society, especially for the students. For the students, reading is not something fun to be done even on the contrary it becomes something boring and saturating. This study aimed at examining the effect of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) learning model assisted by a fairytale toward students' reading skills. This study was a quasi-experimental study designed in a nonequivalent post-test only control group. The population of this study was 98 students. The sample of this study was the fifth grade of Kaliuntu 3 Elementary School, with 23 students and the fifth grade of Kaliuntu 2 Elementary School with 18 students, determined by random sampling technique. Reading skill test in the form of an objective test of 25 questions was used as the instrument. The obtained data were analyzed using inferential statistical analysis (t-test). Based on the results of the t-test calculation, tcount was greater than ttable (tcount 4.31> ttable 2.042) so H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. It means that there are significant differences in reading skills between the groups of students who are taught using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) learning models assisted by fairy tales and the groups of students who were taught using conventional learning. Based on the average value it was known that the average value of the experimental group was greater than the control group. Thus, it can be concluded that the fairytale assisted Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) learning model has a positive effect on students' reading skills in elementary school students. This finding will have implications that are to improve students' reading skills at the elementary school can be done by using a CIRC learning model assisted by fairy tales.

CIRC and STAD in Iranian context: Through the five elements to cooperative learning of lexical collocations

Inspired by the works of scholars who have done great efforts to improve study quality in second language (L2) papers in the recent decade (e.g., Hu & Plonsky, 2019; Larson-Hall, 2012, 2017; Plonsky, 2013; Norris, 2015), this paper aims to capture the perceptions of Iranian authors around issues of quality that have been emphasized by publication manuals (e.g., APA, 2010; Wilkinson, 1999) and recommendation (e.g., Norris et al., 2015). The triggering idea behind the study was that in order to adhere to standards of quality, authors, first, need to perceive the issues highly-associated with the concept. Accordingly, a questionnaire of quality developed by Larson-Hall and Jahanbakhsh (2020) was used to capture respondents’ perceptions. Out of the 1029 authors who had published quantitative papers in 10 Iranian journals from 2015 to 2019, 885 authors could be contacted and 128 answered the questionnaire. The results showed that respondents saw fundamental issues like random sampling, reliability, validity, checking normality, and reporting inferential statistics as the most highly-associated features with quality while the concerned issues by scholars, like generalizability in convenience samplings, use of delayed posttest, reporting non-significant results, and importance of visual presentations are less acknowledged. Moreover, using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), it was revealed that a path of perception exists which starts from sampling issues and going through design and statistical to reporting practices. It was recommended that authors take the issues of study quality more seriously in both their works and the context of education.
