OBJECTIVE In this study, the prevalence of E. vermicularis and its relation with socioeconomic level, age, race, gender, mother's and father's educational level, income status, and housing type were investigated among 1729 students who were between ages 6-12 at 8 different elementary schools (Eryaman Turkkent, Tahsin Sahinkaya, Sahin, Beytepe, Azmi Ertugrul, Ege, Semiha Isen, Samime Talat Primary School) in Kazan, Etimesgut, Cankaya, Pursaklar, Mamak, and Sincan in Ankara. METHODS A questionnaire form and cellophane-taped slides with locked bags were provided for students between November 2010 and May 2011. RESULTS In total, 874 (50.5%) of students were female and 855 (49.5%) of them were male. According to the questionnaire, 197 (11.4%) of students had low, 986 (57.1%) moderate, and 545 (31.5%) high income levels. Also, 148 students out of 1729 were found to be infected with E. vermicularis, and the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis was found 86%; 81% (9.5%) of the infected were male and 67 (7.7%) was female. CONCLUSION As the result of study, a significant difference was found between the presence of E. vermicularis and socio-demographic properties. However, there was no significant difference between presence of E. vermicularis and gender. These results show that the importance of socio-demographic properties on the presence of E. vermicularis.

The prevalance of Enterobius vermicularis in primary school which have different socioecomic level in Ankara

Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of intestinal parasitic diseases (IPD) and associated factors in primary school students and to assess the knowledge and practices of mothers about these diseases. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study carried out in January-March 2014 in 471 students aged 5-11 years, studying at 3 schools randomly selected from the city centre regions with different socioeconomic levels. Stratified sampling method was used in the present study and the data were collected in two stages. In the first stage, parents were informed about the study and pre-prepared questionnaire forms were used to collect the data about the students and parents. In the second stage, laboratory analyses of collected stool samples were performed. Results: The total prevalence of IPD was 18.3%, it was higher in the primary school located in a region with a lower socioeconomic level compared to other two schools (27.6% vs. 14.4%, and 10%, respectively). Most commonly detected parasite was E. vermicularis (12.1%). The prevalence of IPD was not associated with the classroom, gender, number of siblings, and the use of purified drinking water at home, while it was found to decrease with the increasing maternal education level. The maternal knowledge level score was 12.01±4.29 vs. 13.41±3.94 in students with and without IPD, respectively. With regard to the methods used to treat IPD, 23% of the mothers reported that they are using conventional methods. Conclusion: The health education programmes about the associated risk factors are of great importance for early detection and treatment of childhood parasitic infections.

Investigation of Factors Affecting Frequency of Intestinal Parasites in Primary School Students in an Urban Region in Turkey.

Background: Enterobius vermicularis (formerly Oxyuriasis vermicularis), is a prevalent parasitic infection especially in preschool children worldwide. The present study aimed to explore the prevalence of Oxyuriasis and its influencing factors in kindergartens. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 175 children using multi-stage sampling method in Ali Abad-e-Katoul city- Iran in 2015 year. Data were collected using a three-part demographic questionnaire including personal characteristics, predisposing factor of infection, and clinical symptoms. Possibility of infection was tested by Graham method. Data were also analyzed using SPSS software (version 18). Significant level was also considered significant as < 0.05. Results: The mean age of students was 6.30 ± 0.46 years. In total, 175 samples including 96 (54.9%) female were explored, and 109 (62.3%) of samples were lived in the rural areas. Oxyuriasis prevalence was 34.9% in 61 children. Logistic regression model indicated that rural children had 2.62 times greater chance to infect by Oxyuriasis than children of the urban area (Odds Ratio [OR]: 2.62; Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.17 - 4.83, P < 0.05). A history of bruxism increases chance of Oxyuriasis infection 2.02 times than children with no symptom (OR: 2.02; CI: 1.03 - 3.95, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Oxyuriasis vermicularis infection was more prevalent than most of studies conducted in the country (Iran) and in the rural children. Hence, appropriate interventions to reduce the infection especially among rural children through parents education and group treatment in the kindergartens seem likely lucrative.

The investigator conducts an experimental study to identify “Effectiveness of Planned Teaching Programme on prevention of Intestinal Worm Infestations in terms of knowledge among mothers in a selected rural community, West Bengal.” She adopted a quasi-experimental study approach with a pre-test posttest control group design and selected 40 mothers attending I.C.D.S centers (20 mothers in each group) by convenient sampling technique. The structured interview schedule was used to collect data. Results show that the mean difference between pre-test and post-test knowledge scores in the Experimental group is statistically significant for calculated “t” value t19 = 16.8, p ≤ 0.05, and post-test knowledge scores between Experimental and Control groups are statistically significant for calculated “t” value t38 = 19.8, p ≤ 0.05 which indicates the effectiveness of planned teaching programme. No association between the pre-test knowledge score of the Experimental group with selected demographic characteristics of the sample.

Effectiveness of Planned Teaching Programme on Prevention of Intestinal Worm Infestations in Terms of Knowledge among Mothers in a Selected Rural Community, W.B

Objective To compare intestinal parasitoses between urban and rural children in developing countries and its related factors. Methods Children of 1-6 years old in the urban and rural areas who had not taken antihelmenthic drugs in the last 6 months were randomly selected. Various factors were taken as variables in a preformed questionnaire. Results Among the total 52 children, 24 were in urban and 28 were in rural group. Male/female ratio of the rural group was 1:1 and that of the urban group was 1.4:1. Average income was 12 000 taka and 4 000 taka per month in urban and rural areas, respectively. None of the rural group used sanitary latrine, whereas every one in urban group used sanitary latrine. Majority (71%) of the mothers in rural group were below the primary level of education. Majority (75%) of fathers were educated above higher secondary level in urban group. In the rural group 18 (64%) fathers had not received any education. Enterobius vermicularis was observed only in 1 (4%) stool samples of urban children but in rural group it was found in 7 (25%) of the stool samples. Enterobius vermicularis was the main parasite isolated from both groups. Exclusive breast feeding practice of less than 6 months was observed in 20 (83%) children of urban group but in rural group that of less than one year was found in 22 (78%) children. Conclusions Intestinal parasitic infestation is mostly found in rural children. Urban children almost have no intestinal parasitoses. It has the relation with the poor sanitation, low standard of living, less parental income and education, and early weaning. Unnecessary universal deworming of the urban and rural children in developing countries should be discouraged in order to use the money economically and effectively. It can be carried out in rural children and their living standard should be improved.
