Course Description In this course, we will explore the question of the actual and potential connections between democracy and education. Our focus of attention will be placed on a critical examination of democratic theory and its implications for the civic education roles and contributions of teachers, adult educators, community development practitioners, and community organizers. We will survey and deal critically with a range of competing conceptions of democracy, variously described as classical, republican, liberal, radical, marxist, neomarxist, pragmatist, feminist, populist, pluralist, postmodern, and/or participatory. Using narrative inquiry as a means for illuminating and interpreting contemporary practice, we will analyze the implications of different conceptions of democracy for the practical work of civic education.

Whose Science? Whose Knowledge? Thinking from Women's Lives

Although research has emphasized cognition and the use of heuristics and biases by entrepreneurs, the process by which available information influences one's decision to start a business has yet to be clarified. In this study, we test a model where changes in the available information concerning a new venture impact the perceived risk associated with this venture - ultimately affecting the decision to start it. In our model, two important heuristics influence risk perception and bias decision making: availability and anchoring. Moreover, we suggest that these heuristics have opposite effects, depending on whether the available information is framed in positive or negative terms. Results reveal how different combinations of judgmental heuristics and problem framing may stimulate or inhibit entrepreneurial behavior.

Where is the Risk? Availability, Anchoring, and Framing Effects on Entrepreneurial Risk Taking

Cet article pr&#233;sente et analyse une pratique p&#233;dagogique innovante qui consiste &#224; demander &#224; des apprenants d&#8217;&#233;laborer une m&#233;thodologie et un outil d&#8217;&#233;valuation de projets de cr&#233;ation d&#8217;entreprise. L&#8217;approche p&#233;dagogique utilis&#233;e, implique les apprenants dans un processus d&#8217;apprentissage &#224; contre-courant de leur conception traditionnelle de l&#8217;&#233;ducation et les incite &#224; questionner et relativiser la port&#233;e des outils de gestion.L&#8217;analyse de cette pratique met en &#233;vidence des similitudes entre les piliers sur lesquels elle repose et la conception de l&#8217;&#233;ducation de Paulo Freire.

Au c&#339;ur des pr&#233;occupations des pouvoirs publics, l&#8217;entrepreneuriat mobilise d&#8217;importantes ressources et l&#8217;&#233;ducation en entrepreneuriat est &#233;valu&#233;e sur sa capacit&#233; &#224; produire les effets attendus&#160;: cr&#233;ation d&#8217;entreprises, d&#8217;emplois et d&#233;veloppement de l&#8217;esprit d&#8217;entreprendre. Le caract&#232;re processuel de la d&#233;marche entrepreneuriale, ancr&#233;e dans un &#233;cosyst&#232;me par nature dynamique, induit de n&#233;cessaires interactions entre les acteurs impliqu&#233;s dans le projet. Leurs subjectivit&#233;s influent sur leur rapport au projet entrepreneurial. Les deux th&#232;ses pr&#233;sent&#233;es dans ce &#8216;Regards crois&#233;s&#8217; interrogent d&#8217;une part les formes que peut prendre l&#8217;engagement de l&#8217;entrepreneur naissant dans ce contexte sp&#233;cifique de cr&#233;ation et d&#8217;&#233;mergence et d&#8217;autre part l&#8217;&#233;valuation n&#233;cessairement multidimensionnelle de l&#8217;impact des dispositifs d&#8217;&#233;ducation en entrepreneuriat. Ces travaux contribuent &#224; alimenter la bo&#238;te &#224; outils des accompagnateurs en prenant en compte le r&#244;le des facteurs contextuels.

This special issue contributes to extant scholarly debates on gender and entrepreneurship by bringing together articles that offer a contemporary perspective on women’s entrepreneurial leadership at the global level. Collectively, these articles highlight the diversity and complexity of women’s entrepreneurial leadership, demonstrating that it is both economically and contextually embedded, and is a phenomenon worthy of future scholarly attention.
