Psychiatric aspects of impulsivity
TL;DR: Before treatment studies on impulsivity can move forward, measures of impulsivity that capture the core aspects of this behavior need to be refined and tested on the basis of an ideologically neutral model of impulsiveness.
Journal ArticleDOI

Charles L. Bowden,Andrew M. Brugger,Alan C. Swann,Joseph R. Calabrese,Philip G. Janicak,Frederick Petty,Steven C. Dilsaver,John M. Davis,A. John Rush,Joyce G. Small,Enrique S. Woodham,Alan Frazer +36 more
TL;DR: Divalproex was as effective in rapid-cycling manic patients as in other patients and appears to be independent of prior responsiveness to lithium, while lithium was significantly more effective than placebo in reducing the symptoms of acute mania.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled 12-Month Trial of Divalproex and Lithium in Treatment of Outpatients With Bipolar I Disorder
Charles L. Bowden,Joseph R. Calabrese,Susan L. McElroy,Laszlo Gyulai,Adel A. Wassef,Frederick Petty,Harrison G. Pope,James C.-Y. Chou,Paul E. Keck,Linda J. Rhodes,Alan C. Swann,Robert M. A. Hirschfeld,Patricia Wozniak +12 more
TL;DR: Divalproex was superior to lithium in longer duration of successful prophylaxis in the study and less deterioration in depressive symptoms and Global Assessment Scale scores, and patients treated with divalproEx had better outcomes than those treated with placebo or lithium on several secondary outcome measures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characteristics of impulsive suicide attempts and attempters
Thomas R. Simon,Alan C. Swann,Kenneth E. Powell,Lloyd B. Potter,Marcie Jo Kresnow,Patrick W. O'Carroll +5 more
TL;DR: Examination of impulsive suicide attempts within a population-based, case-control study of nearly lethal suicide attempts among people 13-34 years of age suggests that inadequate control of aggressive impulses might be a greater indicator of risk for impulsive suicides than depression.
Journal ArticleDOI
A double-blind, placebo-controlled, prophylaxis study of lamotrigine in rapid-cycling bipolar disorder
Joseph R. Calabrese,Trisha Suppes,Charles L. Bowden,Gary S. Sachs,Alan C. Swann,Susan L. McElroy,Vivek Kusumakar,John A. Ascher,N. Earl,Paul Greene,Eileen Monaghan +10 more
TL;DR: Results indicate lamotrigine monotherapy is a useful treatment for some patients with rapid-cycling bipolar disorder, and survival in study was statistically different between the treatment groups.
