What are the differences between sustainable and smart cities

to the rise of a neoliberalism which has both commoditized otherness and stripped away the buffers of the welfare state. The introduction establishes that, although Brennan critiques the formation of \"theory,\" he is not dismissive of theory in principle; he actually is deeply invested in a trajectory of theory, embodied in the Hegel-Marx line: Bakhtin, Lukács, Benjamin, Adorno, Marcuse, Gramsci, Bourdieu, and Said. Lamenting the predominance of the Nietszchèan line—in which he includes Heidegger, Deleuze and Guattari, Baudrillard, Lyotard, Derrida, Vattimo, Negri, and Virilio—Brennan blasts the celebratory and uncritical use of \"poststructuralism's infinitely interchangeable metaphors of dispersal: decentered subjects, nomadism, ambivalence, the supplement, rhizomatic identity, and the constructed self—terms whose sheer quantity nervously intimates a lack of variation.\" At such polemical textual moments, we feel the full force of Brennan's bile at a discipline that has abnegated its responsibilities; at the same time, the polemic (as all polemics do) tends to create the fantasy of an other whose totality is self-evident and whose heterogeneity is merely superficial. What, indeed, about the politically engaged work of Cary Nelson, BarrettWatten, Michael Bibby, andMichael True, among others, not to mention the intellectuals left of Noam Chomsky, whose dissident work may share the anarchism of the academic left, but whose consequences have been real and whose relationship to dissenting movements in the US and throughout the world is undeniable? (Chomsky gets three short mentions in this book.) Brennan's relative exclusion of contemporary examples of Gramscian intellectuals actively engaged with social movements makes Wars ofPosition a difficult book, because it offers few models for emerging from the malaise that the academy seems to Detailfrom cover suffer from. Yet Brennan is clearly at his best when he is arguing against the received versions of theorists, engaging his Hegelian impulses to reverse the unexamined consensus. His critical reassessment of Orientalism (1978), for example, suggests that Said's foundational text on the Western fantasies of the Middle East has been misread as a Foucauldian project; rather, for Brennan, while Orientalism clearly borrows heavily from Foucault, Said ultimately is arguing against the poststructuralist doxa that underwrite much of contemporary postcolonial theory. Said, in Brennan's reading, is a crucial figure not only for his resistance to the sacred cows of poststructuralism, but also for his embrace of the public responsibilities of the intellectual.

Spaces of Global Capitalism: Towards a Theory of Uneven Geographical Development

This commentary characterises and critiques research on smart cities. I argue that much of
the writing and rhetoric about smart cities seeks to appear non-ideological, commonsensical
and pragmatic. More critically orientated scholarship, while making vital conceptual
and political interventions, presently has four shortcomings that inhibit making sense of
and refashioning the smart city agenda: the lack of detailed genealogies of the concept and
initiatives, the use of canonical examples and one-size fits all narratives, an absence of indepth
empirical case studies of specific smart city initiatives and comparative research that
contrasts smart city developments in different locales and weak collaborative engagement
with various stakeholders. These shortcomings are elaborated, accompanied with suggestions
for addressing them.

Urban revitalization through automated policing and “smart” surveillance in Camden, New Jersey

Platform urbanism may look toward the high-tech city of the future, but it is also already embedded in—and reliant on—the ubiquitous digital systems permeating the landscape. This chapter theorizes platform urbanism broadly, as the form, function, and governance of cities through digital augmentation. It offers an overview of Lower North Philadelphia’s evolution and present condition to contextualize platform spaces. The chapter discusses the digital infrastructure that underlies platform services and platform spaces’ need for connectivity and information processing, before turning to several key municipal and private platform services directly. It concludes by drawing attention to the unevenness of platform urbanization, arguing that this “era” of the city is marked by a patchwork evolution of ubiquitous connectivity and haphazard service accessibility, compounded by the emergence of exclusive spaces of platform capitalism amid the ongoing disinvestment in neighborhood-based civic infrastructure, services, and spaces.

Digital infrastructures, services, and spaces : The geography of platform urbanism

COVID‐19 has stimulated renewed societal and academic debate about the future of cities and urban life. Future visons have veered from the ‘death of the city' to visual renderings and limited experiments with novel 15 minute neighbourhoods. Within this context, we as a diverse group of urban scholars sought to examine the emergent ‘post'‐COVID city through the production of an urban lexicon that investigates its socio‐material contours. The urban lexicon makes three contributions. First, to explore how the pandemic has accelerated certain processes and agendas, while at the same time, other processes, priorities and sites have been decelerated and put on hold. Second, to utilise this framing to examine the impacts of the pandemic on how cities are governed, how urban geographies are managed and lived, and how care emerged as a vital urban resource. Third, to tease out what might be temporary intensifications and what may become configurational in urban governance, platforming, density, technosolutionism, dwelling, crowds, respatialisation, reconcentration, care, improvisation and atmosphere. The urban lexicon proposes a vocabulary for describing and understanding some of the key contours of the emergent post‐pandemic city. Post‐pandemic cities: An urban lexicon of accelerations/decelerations

ABSTRACT This article critiques decontextualized notions of smart urbanism by examining the variegated and spontaneous infrastructural configurations stemming from the deployment of a digital project in an informal urban setting. We offer an empirical examination of the rollout of water ATMs in Mathare Valley, Nairobi, to highlight three types of “smartness beyond the network”: first, where water ATMs evidence a smart digital infrastructure that transcends the networked urban water supply; second, where residents, in their adoption and use of water ATMs, unsettle their original operation, in the process driving them further away from their original design through disruptions from below; and third, where persistent manifestations of pre-existing mechanisms exist that are non-state and non-networked and sometimes integrate indicating digital technologies heterogeneous articulations and smartness from below. In sum, we argue for unpacking Southern and alternative visions for smart digital infrastructure, considering that smartness, within diverse urban settings, is informed not just by hegemonic and aspirational articulations of city making, but also by dwellers’ context-specific and nonlinear processes of place making.
