Journal ArticleDOI
Human schistosomiasis mansoni: immune responses during acute and chronic phases of the infection.
Iramaya Rodrigues Caldas,Ana Carolina Campi-Azevedo,Lúcia Fraga Alves Oliveira,Alda Maria Soares Silveira,Rodrigo Corrêa Oliveira,Giovanni Gazzinelli +5 more
TL;DR: A strong correlation was observed between the production of IL-13 and the degree of fibrosis, and a high heterogeneity between the patients as regards the presence and intensity of periportal fibrosis was revealed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cytokine Regulation of Human Immune Response to Schistosoma mansoni: Analysis of the Role of IL‐4, IL‐5 and IL‐10 on Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell Responses
Luiz Cosme Cotta Malaquias,Luiz Cosme Cotta Malaquias,P. L. Falcao,Alda Maria Soares Silveira,Giovanni Gazzinelli,Aluízio Prata,Robert L. Coffman,V. Pizziolo,C. P. Souza,Daniel G. Colley,Rodrigo Correa-Oliveira +10 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that IL‐10 has an important role in the modulation of the immune response in chronic asymptomatic patients and that this cytokine may be an important factor in controlling morbidity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cytokine production associated with periportal fibrosis during chronic schistosomiasis mansoni in humans.
L. F. Alves Oliveira,E. Moreno,Giovanni Gazzinelli,Olindo Assis Martins-Filho,Alda Maria Soares Silveira,Andrea Gazzinelli,Luiz Cosme Cotta Malaquias,Philip T. LoVerde,P. Martins Leite,Rodrigo Correa-Oliveira +9 more
TL;DR: Univariate analysis identified associations of age, sex, intensity of infection, and absence of eggs/g of feces with moderate/severe fibrosis and an association ofintensity of infection with incipient fibrosis with IL-13.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cytokines as determinants of resistance and pathology in human Schistosoma mansoni infection
Rodrigo Correa-Oliveira,Luiz Cosme Cotta Malaquias,Luiz Cosme Cotta Malaquias,P. L. Falcao,Iramaya R. C. Viana,L.M.G. Bahia-Oliveira,Alda Maria Soares Silveira,Lucia Alves de Oliveira Fraga,Aluízio Prata,Robert L. Coffman,José Roberto Lambertucci,José Renan Cunha-Melo,Olindo Assis Martins-Filho,Olindo Assis Martins-Filho,R. A. Wilson,Giovanni Gazzinelli +15 more
TL;DR: IL-10 is an important cytokine in regulating the immune response and possibly controlling morbidity in human schistosomiasis mansoni, and that the production of IFN-gamma may be associated with resistance to infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Factors affecting high and low human IgE responses to schistosome worm antigens in an area of Brazil endemic for Schistosoma mansoni and hookworm.
M. Webster,Rodrigo Correa-Oliveira,Giovanni Gazzinelli,Iramaya R. C. Viana,Lucia Alves de Oliveira Fraga,Alda Maria Soares Silveira,David W. Dunne +6 more
TL;DR: This work has analyzed antibody isotype responses to S. mansoni adult worm (AW) antigen and soluble egg antigen (SEA) in more than 500 Brazilian individuals, and found similar relationships with age and sex as in the Kenyan and Filipino populations.
