Named Data Networking (NDN) is one of five projects funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation under its Future Internet Architecture Program. NDN has its roots in an earlier project, Content-Centric Networking (CCN), which Van Jacobson first publicly presented in 2006. The NDN project investigates Jacobson's proposed evolution from today's host-centric network architecture (IP) to a data-centric network architecture (NDN). This conceptually simple shift has far-reaching implications for how we design, develop, deploy, and use networks and applications. We describe the motivation and vision of this new architecture, and its basic components and operations. We also provide a snapshot of its current design, development status, and research challenges. Named data networking

The Internet of Things (IoT) opens opportunities for wearable devices, home appliances, and software to share and communicate information on the Internet. Given that the shared data contains a large amount of private information, preserving information security on the shared data is an important issue that cannot be neglected. In this paper, we begin with general information security background of IoT and continue on with information security related challenges that IoT will encountered. Finally, we will also point out research directions that could be the future work for the solutions to the security challenges that IoT encounters.

IoT Security: Ongoing Challenges and Research Opportunities

The use of the Internet is growing in this day and age, so another area has developed to use the Internet, called Internet of Things (IoT). It facilitates the machines and objects to communicate, compute and coordinate with each other. It is an enabler for the intelligence affixed to several essential features of the modern world, such as homes, hospitals, buildings, transports and cities. The security and privacy are some of the critical issues related to the wide application of IoT. Therefore, these issues prevent the wide adoption of the IoT. In this paper, we are presenting an overview about different layered architectures of IoT and attacks regarding security from the perspective of layers. In addition, a review of mechanisms that provide solutions to these issues is presented with their limitations. Furthermore, we have suggested a new secure layered architecture of IoT to overcome these issues.

IoT Elements, Layered Architectures and Security Issues: A Comprehensive Survey.

In view of evolving the Internet infrastructure, ICN is promoting a communication model that is fundamentally different from the traditional IP address-centric model. The ICN approach consists of the retrieval of content by (unique) names, regardless of origin server location (i.e., IP address), application, and distribution channel, thus enabling in-network caching/replication and content-based security. The expected benefits in terms of improved data dissemination efficiency and robustness in challenging communication scenarios indicate the high potential of ICN as an innovative networking paradigm in the IoT domain. IoT is a challenging environment, mainly due to the high number of heterogeneous and potentially constrained networked devices, and unique and heavy traffic patterns. The application of ICN principles in such a context opens new opportunities, while requiring careful design choices. This article critically discusses potential ways toward this goal by surveying the current literature after presenting several possible motivations for the introduction of ICN in the context of IoT. Major challenges and opportunities are also highlighted, serving as guidelines for progress beyond the state of the art in this timely and increasingly relevant topic.

Information-centric networking for the internet of things: challenges and opportunities

Named data networking : a survey

Recently, building automation and management systems, BASs and BMSs, have shift- ed from using proprietary protocols and specialized hardware toward widespread adoption of IP-based open standard technologies. While the IP protocol suite improves software and hardware interoperability, practical large-scale BMS deploy- ments face challenges, including the complexity of network addressing and other con- figuration, reliance on middleware for even relatively simple tasks, and a lack of security. In this article, we propose a data-centric BMS design that uses named data networking, one of the proposed information-centric networking architecture designs. Our sensor data acquisition system uses a hierarchical namespace for data, encryp- tion keys, and access control lists, implements encryption-based access control, and provides a web browser-based data visualization interface that communicates in NDN. Our design has been deployed on a UCLA campus testbed that captures, archives, and visualizes data from industry standard sensors.

Securing building management systems using named data networking

Emerging sensor network technologies will enhance entertainment production, providing both increased expressive capabilities and significant cost savings. The authors explore fundamental challenges of deploying sensor networks for production, concentrating here on feature film sets and networked sensing in support of on-set activity. Film sequences are captured in an order driven by economics and logistics, which often differs drastically from the order presented to an audience. Scenes captured in ‘production time’ must be visually consistent when reassembled during editing. This demo’s driver application is continuity management, which uses records of environmental conditions on the set to support repeatable action by the cast and crew and a consistent environment among many ‘takes’ of many ‘shots’ of many ‘scenes’. Techniques developed will ultimately also enhance the creative flexibility of directors and cinematographers by decreasing setup time and providing additional information for post-production. Given a scene, the system will record lighting equipment used, locations of lights, camera, and actors, as well as light intensity measurements, by fusing data from several different sources. All data is stored and synchronized with each video frame via an interface to a standard SMPTE time clock source on the set. The data will be available during the shoot through an 802.11b connected tablet PC.
