The millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies offer the availability of huge bandwidths to provide unprecedented data rates to next-generation cellular mobile terminals. However, mmWave links are highly susceptible to rapid channel variations and suffer from severe free-space pathloss and atmospheric absorption. To address these challenges, the base stations and the mobile terminals will use highly directional antennas to achieve sufficient link budget in wide area networks. The consequence is the need for precise alignment of the transmitter and the receiver beams, an operation which may increase the latency of establishing a link, and has important implications for control layer procedures, such as initial access, handover and beam tracking. This tutorial provides an overview of recently proposed measurement techniques for beam and mobility management in mmWave cellular networks, and gives insights into the design of accurate, reactive and robust control schemes suitable for a 3GPP NR (NR) cellular network. We will illustrate that the best strategy depends on the specific environment in which the nodes are deployed, and give guidelines to inform the optimal choice as a function of the system parameters.

A Tutorial on Beam Management for 3GPP NR at mmWave Frequencies

This white paper explores the road to implementing broadband connectivity in future 6G wireless systems. Different categories of use cases are considered, from extreme capacity with peak data rates up to 1 Tbps, to raising the typical data rates by orders-of-magnitude, to support broadband connectivity at railway speeds up to 1000 km/h. To achieve these goals, not only the terrestrial networks will be evolved but they will also be integrated with satellite networks, all facilitating autonomous systems and various interconnected structures. We believe that several categories of enablers at the infrastructure, spectrum, and protocol/ algorithmic levels are required to realize the intended broadband connectivity goals in 6G. At the infrastructure level, we consider ultra-massive MIMO technology (possibly implemented using holographic radio), intelligent reflecting surfaces, user-centric and scalable cell-free networking, integrated access and backhaul, and integrated space and terrestrial networks. At the spectrum level, the network must seamlessly utilize sub-6 GHz bands for coverage and spatial multiplexing of many devices, while higher bands will be used for pushing the peak rates of point-to-point links. The latter path will lead to THz communications complemented by visible light communications in specific scenarios. At the protocol/algorithmic level, the enablers include improved coding, modulation, and waveforms to achieve lower latencies, higher reliability, and reduced complexity. Different options will be needed to optimally support different use cases. The resource efficiency can be further improved by using various combinations of full-duplex radios, interference management based on rate-splitting, machine-learning-based optimization, coded caching, and broadcasting.

White Paper on Broadband Connectivity in 6G

Nowadays, 5G is in its initial phase of commercialization. The 5G network will revolutionize the existing wireless network with its enhanced capabilities and novel features. 5G New Radio (5G NR), referred to as the global standardization of 5G, is presently under the $3^{\mathrm {rd}}$ Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and can be operable over the wide range of frequency bands from less than 6GHz to mmWave (100GHz). 3GPP mainly focuses on the three major use cases of 5G NR that are comprised of Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communication (uRLLC), Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC), Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB). For meeting the targets of 5G NR, multiple features like scalable numerology, flexible spectrum, forward compatibility, and ultra-lean design are added as compared to the LTE systems. This paper presents a brief overview of the added features and key performance indicators of 5G NR. The issues related to the adaptation of higher modulation schemes and inter-RAT handover synchronization are well addressed in this paper. With the consideration of these challenges, a next-generation wireless communication architecture is proposed. The architecture acts as the platform for migration towards beyond 5G/6G networks. Along with this, various technologies and applications of 6G networks are also overviewed in this paper. 6G network will incorporate Artificial intelligence (AI) based services, edge computing, quantum computing, optical wireless communication, hybrid access, and tactile services. For enabling these diverse services, a virtualized network slicing based architecture of 6G is proposed. Various ongoing projects on 6G and its technologies are also listed in this paper.

To satisfy the high data demands in future cellular networks, an ultra-densification approach is introduced to shrink the coverage of base station (BS) and improve the frequency reuse. The gain in capacity is expected but at the expense of increased interference, frequent handovers (HOs), increased HO failure (HOF) rates, increased HO delays, increase in ping pong rate, high energy consumption, increased overheads due to frequent HO, high packet losses and bad user experience mostly in high-speed user equipment (UE) scenarios. This paper presents the general concepts of radio access mobility in cellular networks with possible challenges and current research focus. In this article, we provide an overview of HO management in long-term evolution (LTE) and 5G new radio (NR) to highlight the main differences in basic HO scenarios. A detailed literature survey on radio access mobility in LTE, heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and NR is provided. In addition, this paper suggests HO management challenges and enhancing techniques with a discussion on the key points that need to be considered in formulating an efficient HO scheme.

A Survey on Handover Management: From LTE to NR

5G radio access networks are expected to provide very high capacity, ultra-reliability and low latency, seamless mobility, and ubiquitous end-user experience anywhere and anytime. Driven by such stringent service requirements coupled with the expected dense deployments and diverse use case scenarios, the architecture of 5G New Radio (NR) wireless access has further evolved from the traditionally cell-centric radio access to a more flexible beam-based user-centric radio access. This article provides an overview of the NR system multi-beam operation in terms of initial access procedures and mechanisms associated with synchronization, system information, and random access. We further discuss inter-cell mobility handling in NR and its reliance on new downlink-based measurements to compensate for a lack of always-on reference signals in NR. Furthermore, we describe some of the user-centric coordinated transmission mechanisms envisioned in NR in order to realize seamless intra/inter-cell handover between physical transmission and reception points and reduce the interference levels across the network.
