Educational level and adult mortality in Russia : An analysis of routine data 1979 to 1994
TL;DR: Using cross-sectional data on mortality in Russia around the 1979 and 1989 Censuses, mortality gradients according to length of education are analysed and show that educational differences in mortality are at least as big as seen in Western countries, and are most similar to the recently reported differences observed for other former communist countries.

TL;DR: There was an indication that mortality rates for high level drinkers, especially in men, approached those of non-drinkers, and beneficial association of alcohol consumption and mortality may be limited depending upon the prevalence of other risk factors in the studied population.
