Across the broad fields of educational theory and research, constructivism has become something akin to a secular religion. In her book Evolution as a Religion (1985), Mary Midgley wrote that the theory of evolution "is not just an inert piece of theoretical science. It is, and cannot help being, also a powerful folk-tale about human origins. Any such narrative must have symbolic force" (1985, p. 1). She might well have written the same about constructivism, which is, whatever else it may be, a "powerful folktale" about the origins of human knowledge. Philosophy of Education

In this study, we address the topic of interorganizational network change by exploring factors that affect the choice of alliance and interlock partners. While many studies have been devoted to investigating various factors driving network partner choice, there is also an interesting and unexplored tension in this body of work. On the one hand, much work emphasizes change in social structure--showing that firms expand networks by forming new relationships with new partners. At the same time, other scholars emphasize stability of social structure--showing that firms tend to choose past exchange partners. We seek to reconcile this tension by proposing that firms form new relationships with new partners as a form of exploration, and form additional relationships with existing partners as a form of exploitation (March 1991). Further, whether exploration or exploitation is chosen depends on the type of uncertainty that firms are facing: whether it is firm-specific or market-level uncertainty. We test our hypotheses using data on both interlock and alliance networks for the 300 largest U.S. firms during the 1988-1993 period. The results provide some evidence that whether networks are stable or changing depends on the type of uncertainty experienced by firms.

Friends or Strangers? Firm-Specific Uncertainty, Market Uncertainty, and Network Partner Selection

We plan to explore with uncertainty some theoretic and practical implications of the idea of certainty. Much of what we have to say may of itself not be new. Nevertheless, some psychodynamic and psychotherapeutic problems may be differently and, perhaps, more successfully approached from this conceptual frame. Another dimension, overlapping many concepts of general currency, may be added to the therapist's armamentarium. From the beginning of recorded history, man has demonstrated intolerance for the unknown. He has a tendency to search for realistic answers. When nature does not easily disclose her secrets, he may seek to satisfy himself by establishing even for the physical universe a law which he calls the uncertainty principle . Not being able to find realistic answers, they are sometimes projected.
