Li plating as unwanted side reaction in commercial Li-ion cells - A review

The demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high mass-specific capacities, high rate capabilities and long-term cyclabilities is driving the research and development of LIBs with nickel-rich NMC (LiNixMnyCo1−x−yO2, $$x \geqslant 0.5$$) cathodes and graphite (LixC6) anodes. Based on this, this review will summarize recently reported and widely recognized studies of the degradation mechanisms of Ni-rich NMC cathodes and graphite anodes. And with a broad collection of proposed mechanisms on both atomic and micrometer scales, this review can supplement previous degradation studies of Ni-rich NMC batteries. In addition, this review will categorize advanced mitigation strategies for both electrodes based on different modifications in which Ni-rich NMC cathode improvement strategies involve dopants, gradient layers, surface coatings, carbon matrixes and advanced synthesis methods, whereas graphite anode improvement strategies involve surface coatings, charge/discharge protocols and electrolyte volume estimations. Electrolyte components that can facilitate the stabilization of anodic solid electrolyte interfaces are also reviewed, and trade-offs between modification techniques as well as controversies are discussed for a deeper understanding of the mitigation strategies of Ni-rich NMC/graphite LIBs. Furthermore, this review will present various physical and electrochemical diagnostic tools that are vital in the elucidation of degradation mechanisms during operation to supplement future degradation studies. Finally, this review will summarize current research focuses and propose future research directions. Application of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to commercial Li-ion cells: a review

Lithium-ion batteries decay every time as it is used. Aging-induced degradation is unlikely to be eliminated. The aging mechanisms of lithium-ion batteries are manifold and complicated which are strongly linked to many interactive factors, such as battery types, electrochemical reaction stages, and operating conditions. In this paper, we systematically summarize mechanisms and diagnosis of lithium-ion battery aging. Regarding the aging mechanism, effects of different internal side reactions on lithium-ion battery degradation are discussed based on the anode, cathode, and other battery structures. The influence of different external factors on the aging mechanism is explained, in which temperature can exert the greatest impact compared to other external factors. As for aging diagnosis, three widely-used methods are discussed: disassembly-based post-mortem analysis, curve-based analysis, and model-based analysis. Generally, the post-mortem analysis is employed for cross-validation while the curve-based analysis and the model-based analysis provide quantitative analysis. The challenges in the use of quantitative diagnosis and on-board diagnosis on battery aging are also discussed, based on which insights are provided for developing online battery aging diagnosis and battery health management in the next generation of intelligent battery management systems (BMSs).

Lithium-ion battery aging mechanisms and diagnosis method for automotive applications: Recent advances and perspectives

Improvement of life-time is an important issue in the development of Li-ion batteries. Aging mechanisms limiting the life-time can efficiently be characterized by physico-chemical analysis of aged cells with a variety of complementary methods. This study reviews the state-of-the-art literature on Post-Mortem analysis of Li-ion cells, including disassembly methodology as well as physico-chemical characterization methods for battery materials. A detailed scheme for Post-Mortem analysis is deduced from literature, including pre-inspection, conditions and safe environment for disassembly of cells, as well as separation and post-processing of components. Special attention is paid to the characterization of aged materials including anodes, cathodes, separators, and electrolyte. More specifically, microscopy, chemical methods sensitive to electrode surfaces or to electrode bulk, and electrolyte analysis are reviewed in detail. The techniques are complemented by electrochemical measurements using reconstruction methods for electrodes built into half and full cells with reference electrode. The changes happening to the materials during aging as well as abilities of the reviewed analysis methods to observe them are critically discussed.

Second life of electric vehicle batteries: relation between materials degradation and environmental impact

Application of Li-ion batteries for transportation not only requires long cycling life but also the preservation of the electrochemical performance during the resting period. For certain car usage this resting time could be predominant compared with the cycling activity and is referred to as calendar aging. To understand the aging mechanisms during calendar aging, an extensive post-mortem study was conducted on commercial 16 Ah NMC/graphite pouch cells stored at 5, 25, 45, and 60 °C. The post-mortem analyses were performed in parallel within three separate laboratories across Europe. They included visual inspection and structural and microstructural analysis along with a combination of analytical techniques to determine accurately the composition of positive (NMC) and negative (graphite) electrodes and the electrolyte. Post-Mortem Analysis of Calendar-Aged 16 Ah NMC/Graphite Pouch Cells for EV Application

Hard carbon is one of the most promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries. In this work, new types of biomass-derived hard carbons were obtained through pyrolysis of different kinds of agro-industrial biowaste (corncob, apple pomace, olive mill solid waste, defatted grape seed and dried grape skin). Furthermore, the influence of pretreating the biowaste samples by hydrothermal carbonization and acid hydrolysis was also studied. Except for the olive mill solid waste, discharge capacities typical of biowaste-derived hard carbons were obtained in every case (≈300 mAh·g−1 at C/15). Furthermore, it seems that hydrothermal carbonization could improve the discharge capacity of biowaste samples derived from different nature at high cycling rates, which are the closest conditions to real applications.
