Blast furnace slag has a long tradition of use in different areas of civil engineering. From the 19th century to the present day, there has been a wide range of cost-effective and environmentally friendly applications for this industrial by-product. Starting with data on the historic use of blast furnace slag and continuing to today’s production rate and modern usage, this chapter presents the most common and closely investigated applications of blast furnace slag in a wide range of civil engineering areas. Blast furnace slag has latent hydraulic properties that permit its most common application as a cement additive and in concrete structures. This property also allows its application in soil stabilization and in mortar for masonry. In this chapter, the results of research conducted worldwide (laboratory and in situ) are presented to illustrate the high value of blast furnace slag as a material in civil engineering projects.

Application of blast furnace slag in civil engineering: Worldwide studies

This article emphasis the effective use of coals ashes in concrete which were generally dumped or used for low profile applications in early times. In meantime with profound studies, researchers started using coal ashes such as Fly Ash (FA), Coal Bottom Ash (CBA) and Pond Ash (PA) in concrete to reduce the dumped land sites to attain sustainable environment. Moreover, utilization of coal ashes in concrete overcome the risk of depletion of natural resources and also helps in to reduce the carbon emissions. Therefore, the current article presents a systematic review of 209 studies related to utilization of coal ashes which were carried out over a period of 70 years ranging from 1950 to present time. The performance of coal ashes (i.e., FA, CBA and PA) in concrete in terms of fresh properties such as water requirements and consistency of cement paste, workability of different concretes i.e., Normally Vibrated Concrete (NVC), Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) containing natural and recycled aggregates is critically evaluated and summarized. Further, the mechanical properties such as compressive strength and tensile strength and durability properties dealing from permeability consideration of concrete to chemical attack are also reviewed in this article. The different studies revealed that incorporation of FA in concrete as supplementary cementing material enhances the workability properties, mechanical strength and durable properties due to their fineness and pozzolanic effect. Similarly, CBA also gave positive results when used as fine aggregates in appropriate content in concrete. 

A review on the properties of natural and recycled coarse aggregates concrete made with different coal ashes

This paper presents an experimental investigation carried out to study the effects of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) on strength development of mortar and the optimum use of slag in mortar Cement was partially replaced with seven percentages (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% and 70%) of slag by weight Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) mortar was also prepared as reference mortar A total of 400 cube and briquet mortar specimens were cast and compressive as well as tensile strength of the mortar specimens were determined at curing age of 3, 7, 14, 28, 60, 90 and 180 days Test results show that strength increases with the increase of slag up to an optimum value, beyond which, strength values start decreasing with further addition of slag Among the seven slag mortars, the optimum amount of cement replacement is about 40%, which provides 19% higher compressive strength and 25% higher tensile strength as compared to OPC mortar K EY W ORDS : Slag; Cement; Mortar; Compressive Strength; Tensile Strength; Hydration DOI: http://dxdoiorg/103329/mistv3i08053
