MUCKE aims to mine a large volume of images, to structure them conceptually and to use this conceptual structuring in order to improve large-scale image retrieval. The last decade witnessed important progress concerning low-level image representations. However, there are a number problems which need to be solved in order to unleash the full potential of image mining in applications. The central problem with low-level representations is the mismatch between them and the human interpretation of image content. This problem can be instantiated, for instance, by the incapability of existing descriptors to capture spatial relationships between the concepts represented or by their incapability to convey an explanation of why two images are similar in a content-based image retrieval framework. We start by assessing existing local descriptors for image classification and by proposing to use co-occurrence matrices to better capture spatial relationships in images. The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images. Consequently, we introduce methods which tackle these two problems and compare results to state of the art methods. In a recent article in the journal RETINA, Querques et al described a case series study of Best vitelliform macular dystrophy. The authors proposed preferential hyperacuity perimetry (PHP) as a mean to assess functional impairment in various stages of the disease. They reported a significant correlation between the morphological severity of the disease and the extent of metamorphopsia (visual distortion of objects) as quantified with PHP. This result is consistent with the working hypothesis that in the early stages of outer retinal disease, photoreceptors are still intact but spatially shifted, such that hyperacuity is affected. Although PHP was specifically developed for early detection of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), it may be useful for measuring the severity of other macular conditions, such as hydroxychloroquine retinal toxicity and as we learn now also the atrophic stages of Best disease. While the cause and time scales of these macular conditions are very different, their natural histories share one aspect: In at least part of these patients, the first symptoms could begin with metamorphopsia. The use of a psychophysical test such as PHP for early detection of CNV is in a more mature state, compared with other macular diseases. I therefore take this opportunity to review the past, present, and future contributions of PHP in the management of AMD.

Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment: Clinical Preoperative and Postoperative Handling

Background To report a case of autologous corneal transplant in a patient with corneal leukoma and choroidal melanoma in the fellow eye. Case presentation A 56-year-old woman was complaining about decrease in vision in her left eye. The patient was on the waiting list for a corneal transplant on her right eye due to corneal leucoma after a previous herpes infection. The patient was diagnosed with choroidal melanoma in her left eye. Due to the tumor size (longitudinal diameter >10 mm; anterior-posterior diameter >16 mm) the patient decided to undergo enucleation, after being informed about different treatment options (brachytherapy and enucleation). The patient showed her willingness to use the cornea of the left eye as a transplant for her right eye. After discussion with the ethical committee and its approval, and signing informed consent, the patient underwent enucleation of her left eye. The sample was examined by a pathologist and found to be free of melanoma cells in the corneolimbal tissue. Afterwards, trepanation of the donor cornea button was performed and transplanted to the left eye. Conclusion Autologous corneal transplantation is a safe and feasible procedure in selected cases.

Autologous Corneal Transplant from an Enucleated Fellow Eye for Choroidal Melanoma: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION Illegal immigration from Africa to Israel expanded in recent years, bringing illegal immigrants, mostly from Eritrea and Sudan. No data regarding the ophthalmic conditions of this population was previously published. AIMS To delineate reasons for ophthalmologic emergency room visits and hospitalizations in the ophthalmology department at a tertiary center in Tel Aviv, Israel. METHODS In this retrospective study we reviewed the records of patients of Eritrean and Sudanese origin arriving at the ophthalmic emergency room at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center between June 2012 and August 2012 and hospitalized in the ophthalmology ward between August 2011 and August 2012. RESULTS Ninety eight patients were included. Most were male and they were mainly between 20-39 years old. Most were Eritreans. Nearly half of all referrals were due to traumatic causes, with blunt trauma (42.2%) and foreign body (40%) being the most common cause, many due to work-related injuries. DISCUSSION This study emphasizes the unique medical situation of this displaced population and raises the need for proper prevention and education which may reduce the number of hospital referrals in this population.
