A limiting factor of the power conversion efficiencies of organic photovoltaic devices is low voltage output Methano derivatives of the trimetallic endohedral fullerene Lu3N@C80 have now been synthesized and used as the acceptor in organic photovoltaics The open circuit voltage of the devices is significantly above those made using alternative fullerenes So far, one of the fundamental limitations of organic photovoltaic (OPV) device power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) has been the low voltage output caused by a molecular orbital mismatch between the donor polymer and acceptor molecules Here, we present a means of addressing the low voltage output by introducing novel trimetallic nitride endohedral fullerenes (TNEFs) as acceptor materials for use in photovoltaic devices TNEFs were discovered in 1999 by Stevenson et al 1; for the first time derivatives of the TNEF acceptor, Lu3N@C80, are synthesized and integrated into OPV devices The reduced energy offset of the molecular orbitals of Lu3N@C80 to the donor, poly(3-hexyl)thiophene (P3HT), reduces energy losses in the charge transfer process and increases the open circuit voltage (Voc) to 260 mV above reference devices made with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric methyl ester (C60-PCBM) acceptor PCEs >4% have been observed using P3HT as the donor material This work clears a path towards higher PCEs in OPV devices by demonstrating that high-yield charge separation can occur with OPV systems that have a reduced donor/acceptor lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy offset

Endohedral fullerenes for organic photovoltaic devices

Ever since the first experimental evidence of the existence of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) was obtained, the search for carbon cages with encapsulated metals and small molecules has become a very active field of research. EMFs exhibit unique electronic and structural features, with potential applications in many fields. Furthermore, functionalized EMFs offer additional potential applications because of their higher solubility and their ease of characterization by X-ray crystallography and other techniques. Herein we review the general field of EMFs, particularly of functionalized EMFs. We also address their structures and their (electrochemical) properties, as well as applications of these fascinating compounds.

Structural aspects of fullerene chemistry--a journey through fullerene chirality.

Endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs), a new class of hybrid molecules formed by encapsulation of metallic species inside fullerene cages, exhibit unique properties that differ distinctly from those of empty fullerenes because of the presence of metals and their hybridization effects via electron transfer. This critical review provides a balanced but not an exhaustive summary regarding almost all aspects of EMFs, including the history, the classification, current progress in the synthesis, extraction, isolation, and characterization of EMFs, as well as their physiochemical properties and applications in fields such as electronics, photovoltaics, biomedicine, and materials science. Emphasis is assigned to experimentally obtained results, especially the X-ray crystallographic characterizations of EMFs and their derivatives, rather than theoretical calculations, although the latter has indeed enhanced our knowledge of metal–cage interactions. Finally, perspectives related to future developments and challenges in the research of EMFs are proposed. (381 references)

Current status and future developments of endohedral metallofullerenes

The world of endohedral fullerenes was significantly enlarged over the past seven years by the cluster fullerenes, which contain structures such as the M(2)C(2) carbides and the M(3)N nitrides. While the carbide clusters are generated under the standard arc-burning conditions according to stabilization conditions, the nitride cluster fullerenes (NCFs) are formed by varying the composition of the cooling gas atmosphere in the arc-burning process. The special conditions for NCF synthesis is described in detail and the optimum conditions for the production of NCFs as the main product in fullerene syntheses are given. A general review of all NCFs reported to date consists of the structures, properties, and stability of the NCFs as well as the abundance of the NCFs in the fullerene soot. It is shown that all cages with even carbon atoms from C(68) to C(98) are available as endohedral nitride cluster structures (with the exception of C(72), C(74), and C(76)). Specifically, the NCFs form the largest number of structures that violate the isolated pentagon rule (IPR). Finally some practical applications of these cluster fullerenes are illustrated and an outlook is given, taking the superior stability of these endohedral fullerenes into account.

Metal nitride cluster fullerenes: their current state and future prospects.

The first derivatives of Y3N@C80 have been synthesized and fully characterized. 1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of N-ethylazomethine ylide yielded mainly the pyrrolidine monoadduct of the icosahedral (Ih) symmetry cage exclusively at a [6,6] double bond. The same regioselectivity on a [6,6] double bond was observed when the endohedral compound was cyclopropanated with diethyl bromomalonate. These results are in pronounced contrast to those observed for icosahedral symmetry Sc3N@C80, for which all reported derivatives add completely regioselectively to [5,6] double bonds. 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HMQC spectroscopy revealed that the addition pattern on Y3N@C80 resulted in a pyrrolidinofullerene derivative with unsymmetric pyrrolidine carbons and symmetric geminal protons. The cyclopropanated monoadduct exhibited symmetric ethyl groups on the malonate, consistent with regioselective addition at a [6,6] double bond. Trimetallic nitride endohedral metallofullerenes: reactivity dictated by the encapsulated metal cluster.

Fullerene C60 was used as the center block for core−shell macromolecular structures that are symmetric in three dimensions. These macromolecules contain block hydrophilic−hydrophobic moieties to facilitate intramolecular phase separation, making them essentially unimolecular micellar structures. We successfully used these macromolecules to encapsulate an aqueous or polar minor phase in a lipophilic solution and to prepare silver metal nanoparticles.
