Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct

In recent decades, struggles for recognition have increasingly dominated the political landscape.1 Recognition theorists such as Charles Taylor (1994) and Axel Honneth (1995) seek to interpret and justify these struggles through the idea that our identity is shaped, at least partly, by our relations with other people. Because our identity is shaped in this way, it is alleged that feelings of self-worth, self-respect and self-esteem are possible only if we are positively recognised for who we are. Consequently, for many political theorists, recognition is an integral component of a satisfactory modern theory of justice, as well as the means by which both historical and contemporary political struggles can be understood and justified.

After the use of coordinates had dominated many branches of mathematics and physics for centuries, a critical review of these methods was initiated by a new look on its foundations.

Die Anerkennung der Relevanz von Erfahrung und Bedeutung stellt eine gemeinsame Basis vieler qualitativer Studien dar. Allerdings wird die Verwendung dieser Begriffe zunehmend trivialisiert, und sie werden bei der Datenanalyse oft mechanistisch genutzt mit der Folge des Verlusts des aus den theoretischen Wurzeln abgeleiteten ursprunglichen Reichtums dieser Konzepte. In unserem Beitrag greifen wir auf diese Ursprunge zuruck, indem wir theoretische Postulate aus phanomenologischen und hermeneutischen Traditionen sichten und ihre Konvergenz in einer ganzheitlichen Perspektive vorschlagen. Die Herausforderung besteht darin, die lokalen Quellen von Bedeutung zu finden, um von hier aus die Erfahrungen von Menschen verstehen zu konnen. Dies ist Grundlage fur den von uns vorgeschlagenen Ansatz des "Encounter Context Themes" (ECT), der das Hauptgewicht auf die Untersuchung von Erfahrung und Bedeutung als Teil eines groseren Ganzen legt: der Lebenswelt der Teilnehmer/innen. Mittels ECT wollen wir vorhandene qualitative Verfahren erganzen unter Ruckgriff auf bereits verfugbare theoretische Grundlagen, statt unabhangig hiervon eine neue Methodik zu konzipieren.

Background: Cocaine users tend to have a higher frequency of risk behaviors. Aim: To compare risk behaviors of out ¬of ¬treatment Cocaine Base Paste (CBP) and Cocaine Hydrochloride (CH) users, by means of Privileged Access Interviewing in a one¬ year prospective study. Material and methods: Twenty ¬eight interviewers were trained to recruit and administer a questionnaire on substance use patterns and related risk behaviors. Intentioned sampling was carried out in four municipalities of Santiago, Chile. Subjects who used CBP (group 1) or CH (group 2) at least once in the last month, with primary current use of CBP (group 1) or CH (group 2), and without treatment for substance abuse in the last six months were interviewed. Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) were employed to compare risk behaviors during follow ¬up. Results: Four hundred and two of 467 subjects (86.1%) were followed up for one year. CBP users (n=204) reported greater frequency of self ¬inflicted injuries (Odds Ratio (OR): 1.97 [95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.07¬3.66]) and suicide attempts (OR: 2.68 (95%CI: 1.19¬6.01]) than CH users. Conclusions: CBP users had a greater frequency of self ¬inflicted injuries and suicide attempts, both life threatening risk behaviors, than CH users. This profile shows the high vulnerability of CBP users and should encourage further research and design of outreach interventions, particularly focused on this group.

 Los programas de apoyo psicosocial se centran en la relacion entre agente de intervencion y participante. La literatura teorica indica la importancia de dicha relacion y las caracteristicas de los agentes, asi como estudios empiricos dan cuenta de su influencia en los efectos de la intervencion. Sin embargo, tales caracterizaciones son genericas, sin atender a la diversidad de participantes; y los estudios usan variables definidas a priori que no recogen las experiencias de participacion. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar, desde la perspectiva de usuarios de dos programas psicosociales chilenos, la relacion que establecieron con sus agentes de intervencion, y su influencia en la implementacion y efectos de la misma segun su nivel de vulnerabilidad. Se realizaron doce entrevistas, analizadas desde la Teoria Fundamentada. Se identificaron experiencias positivas y negativas asociadas al apoyo psicosocial prestado por los agentes, y variaciones en los cambios , sucediendo que para las personas en mayor vulnerabilidad el apoyo emocional fue un medio crucial para recibir apoyo tecnico. Se concluye sobre la importancia de que los agentes puedan adaptarse a distintos tipos de usuarios.
